Low Odour Alkyd
I have to repaint a bunch of change room doors in a clothing store with oil. Store will open 8 hours or so after we finish. The client is a little worried about smell.
My understanding is that the low odour alkyds have a neutralizer that eliminates the smell, although the air is still full of noxious stuff, it just doesn't smell like it. Is the quality good. Do they work well? Brands you would recommend? |

Re: Low Odour Alkyd
Hummmm.... I know of Low Odor Oil Primers but not finish paint.... maybe I missed something... I dont use oil much anymore....
There is nothing that will totally eliminate the oil smell... If they want you to use oil they will have to understand that its oil and it is what it is... people that dont paint everyday will smell it instantly... just like people that dont smoke will smell smoke... get some air movers in there... the faster the oil dries the faster the smell will go away... use Jap Drier.... tell them to light candles or insense when they open.... beleive it or not... a salad bowl of sliced lemons in the center of room works well with oil smell.... |

Re: Low Odour Alkyd
Maybe if you scuff it up really well you can use an alternative to oil such as Latex Devflex Devoe Coatings - ICI -
As far as an oderless oil finish paint I dont know... Oderless oil primer yes it cuts the oder about 70% I would say if you have to go that route why not convert to latex for finish coat? There are some really great latex and latex epoxy's on the market that replace oil products all day long.

Re: Low Odour Alkyd
We use Japan drier and put a couple tablespoons of pure vanilla into it- it won't discolor the paint and it makes it smell like a bakery. Just make sure you use pure vanilla extract and not the imitation vanilla. We keep some bottles in our vans for people who have a sensitivity to oils.
This really works - try it and you will be amazed! The Japan drier accelerates the drying of the oil... Bay Area Painting Contractor |
