Let me get this straight. Your planning on passing off someone elses work as your own?

I think he's trying to put together a professional looking brochure and might not be able to take pictures as nice as professionals do (lighting, HQ Camera, experience, etc.), he may also want models as opposed to himself or his possibly "not much to look at crew".

There are several on-line services that have them at a very reasonable price, Nathan posted a few before, maybe he'll see this and post them, or maybe pm him. One of them was: http://www.istockphoto.com

I dont agree with your comment. What is the difference if i purchased a pic from someone on the forum or buy a few from the hundred of thousands from those stock photo sites? What about all those other people who purchase photos from these stock photo sites. Im guessing they are passing on other peoples artwork right? In a sense yes, but where else could you get high res. professional looking pics? Im pretty sure 99% of all professional looking brochures has pics taken by someone else.

hudson & mikeco gets my point.

Paying for the right to use artwork and/or images (licensing) is not stealing
Regardless of one's opinions of it, it's a common practice in marketing

I didn't mean to imply that it was stealing or that there was anything illegal about the practice. I know that it is done all the time. I am however of the opinion that, legal or not, you are misrepresenting yourself by showing someone elses work and claiming it as your own.

Just my opinion.

Is this you :

or a misrepresentation?

Just kidding, I know what your saying, it would be ideal to have a professional photographer take the pictures, have the place you did the work allow you the time and space to do the photo shoot and move any unsightly objects. I think it's a matter of cost and practicality to use stock photos. What I do is take a crap load of pictures and hope for a few good ones, sometimes you forget, they don't come out well or your prohibited from taking pictures (had that on a job not to long ago). I'm not sure what you would tell a customer if they asked if you did the work in the pictures if they were stock photos. There are some ethical issues, I don't have the answers, but I don't think anyone is trying to pull off a scam here.

Re: Looking To Purchase Commercial Before & After Pics

To answer the question, no I do not have any, but there are many places to obtain files photos.

Second, the underlaying debate. I had a fellow paper hanger contact me about using one of my photos for a postcard mailing. I was not happy he wanted to use MY work to represent HIS ability (luckily he was not in my market, because then I would not think twice about saying NO!)

I fretted over the ethics of this for some time and asked a lot of others. Generally most of the other hangers I asked thought it was a tad shady for him to market my work as his own, but one person said something that stuck. If I thought he was capable of doing the same quality of work, then it was not false advertising or a gross misrepresentation.

So I approached it as another avenue of business and negotiated a price for his use of my photograph. Wrote up a standard use of copyrighted material contract, and wished him the best of luck.

Also, I like the guy and did not want to be a roadblock for his success.

I bet if you asked for pictures of pretty girls for your brochure, you would have got them for free.
Go to a commercial site and take some yourself, then the ethical part is a have truth anyway. They are your photos

Re: Looking To Purchase Commercial Before & After Pics

brochure is just about complete with stock photos. Like mentioned before, if it was wrong, then stock photo sites would have been out of business. Im pretty sure 99% of companies who markets use other peoples photos (legally) . With those pic quality on my brochure, i couldnt even come close with my pics.
