Latex Trim And Doors

I'm new to this forum and was wondering if you had suggestions. We are phasing out oils on trim and doors, espescially in new custom homes. The doors are being sprayed, sometimes hung sometimes not. My questions are 1: when spraying hung doors and masking hinges, is there a better way to tape or better kind of tape so that the tape does not come off when the doors are being swung open and closed.
2: on the trim, the latex shows more brush strokes than the oil does and does not settle as nice, i have tried thinning with flotrol or water to get better flow, any other ideas?
thanks -mike

Re: Latex Trim And Doors

Mike,

We spray all of our trims & doors with latex , white semi gloss.

After the door is hung, trim installed, holes filled, and caulked, we remove all doors & hardware. Setup up a room specifically for spraying by taping all the walls and leaning the doors against them. Spray the sides, and the front, leave to dry, and spray the other side.

I would personally remove the doors and hardware

Have you tried using a waterborne product? Most big paint co's have them now. BM, SW. I use Muralo's lays off better then conventional latex.

We remove most of the time but sometimes the doors are solid and very heavy. i like spraying the doors laying flat on horses, that way you can spray a thick coat with no chance of runs.

Unfortunantly you're never going to get all the brush lines out when using a latex, I too would suggest a waterborne product like a Deflex or something of that nature.

As far as the hinges..much easier to just take them off.

Re: Latex Trim And Doors

Never tried these but someone makes a deal that connects doors together - freestanding in a zig-zag pattern. The doors can be placed in the middle of a big room and sprayed without having to turn them to do the 'other' side. I think SW carries these. Sorry I do not have more info....somebody else here will prolly know

I use the door brackets Dale is referring to. Got them from SW. They work well for new construction. I would always pull the doors and spray them.

Remove hardware, connect 2 doors together with zenitram's "door Stands"-from paintworld, they connect doors at hinges standing and you can paint all sides at once this works best! Then spray with Graham ceramic satin waterborne enamel or waterbased satin impervo from ben moore, coronado water based rustscat semi gloss is another good one

Thumbs up

Re: Latex Trim And Doors

You all can talk about removing the doors, masking the hinges with tape, or other time consuming processes, but I just recently tried the Hingemags, and everything else is just a wast of time and money.
These things actually work! and work great.
I masked hinges with tape for years. I also tried removing the doors.
Never again.
With the hingemags, I can cover about 100 hinges in less than an hour, and not have to remove the doors. You do the math.
These things are great!
I will never remove another door or mask another hinge again.
Thanks again RC!
