Latex Semi Gloss Over Latex Semi-gloss?
About a year ago I did a remodel on a home. I did the painting myself. In the bathrooms where there was semigloss, I used Kilz original primer over the existing paint because I was unsure if i could have just painted semi gloss over the existing.
In the time that has passed, they decided that they didn't like the color they picked for the bathroom, so they called a handyman to repaint it, thinking (probably correctly) that I wouldn't want to go back for a job that small. Now they are very unhappy with the paint job the handyman did...very sloppy cut-in etc. Now they have called me to see if I would go re-do the re-do. I have to assume that the handyman just painted right over my paint...My question is: will his paint job have adhered to mine?...If I go there and can peel up a strip with my thumbnail, what steps need to be taken to correct it? I consider myself to be pretty good at applying paint in a clean manner, but I defer to the experts for these prep questions. |

The answer is, it should have stuck
...if he actually did some prep clean/sand I share your concern... he may not have...it doesn't sound like it was a pro job If you can peel the paint up with your thumbnail, it will have to be removed ...or I should say, anything that peels up easy, and loosely adhering paint will have to be removed Sand to feather any spots where the removed paint meets the adhering, then scuff sand the whole thing, dust (or clean), then a good primer and paint That should work

Re: Latex Semi Gloss Over Latex Semi-gloss?
Thanks Slick..very helpful.
I haven't been to the job yet. I am really hoping I can't lift it with a thumbnail. Iseiously doubt that the guy did any sort of sanding or scuffing type prep work. I'll go check it this week, and if the paint lifts, it will be a T&M job...I appreciate the reply. |

Do an adhesion test. With a razor blade, cut a 2-3" X on the wall. Put a piece of masking tape over it. Wait a couple minutes, and pull off. If the paint comes off, its an unstable surface. If the paint stays solid, your good.
