Labeling Paint Cans

Does anyone else label the paint cans that they give to the customer for touch-ups? I thought I had heard of the idea around here or somewhere.

My label I just made up is a 2" X 4" and printed on the computer. It has my company name, phone number, area or room the paint was used, color name or number, and date the can was opened. I also added "Recycle your paint!" and added a phone number and website to our state's recycling information. I added that because I was worried someone might illegal dispose of the can and all MY information is on there. I would think this would eliminate my liability.

I figured it was a good way to leave my contact information with the customer in another place in case they loose my card or contract.

Please let me know how many of you do this and what you think about the idea.

Re: Labeling Paint Cans

Flawless,

Great idea! I love all the details that you include on the cans.

I always leave one quart per color with the date, location, color name and color number.

I pack these cans in a small house shaped box that is supplied by Sherwin Williams. Got the idea when I used to paint new residential construction. We would leave this for the new homeowners.

Included in my "custom touchup kit" is a can opener, stir stick, a couple of sponge brushes, a rag and brief instructions on how to care for the new paint job.

I also use one during my sales presentation. The ladies really appreciate it.

Keep up the good work!

Hmmm...you 2 have me thinking

I'm used to finding a corner of the garage or basement and putting the extra paint there-simply labeled with the name of the room painted, on top of each can. I dont know if I'd go as far as you guys just yet, but great ideas. I might "borrow" your ideas at some point

I just use a sharpie on the lid next to the drip of paint on top

Thanks Tom. I like the additional things you've added in the "custom touch up kit". It makes perfect sense and is a great thing to add into the sale. It cost so little too.

Re: Labeling Paint Cans

We have a sticker with name, number, etc. that we affix to the paint can.

We also write what was painted with the paint on the can lid (e.g. kitchen walls, bathroom trim & doors, etc.)

Lastly, we photocopy the receipt (most paint comes from Sherwin-Williams), write what the paint was used for on the copy and stick it in the customer's file in case they lose the can and need some touch ups.

Labels- what an awesome idea that surely looks much more professional than my chick scratch handwriting. Probably a good idea to put one on the bottom of each can also; my worker tends to put any lid on any can.

Re: Labeling Paint Cans

I always grab color swatches for the colors being used while the paint is being mixed. With every color I use I fill up a quart (or whatever is left in a can if less) to leave for them. I put a paint dab on the cut out square for match proof, mark the brand & sheen, tape it on the lid, and the customer always loves it.

Good idea. I've lost jobs to the label on a 10 yr. old can of paint.

Re: Labeling Paint Cans

My paint store prints me a label when I buy the paint. I tell them the customer name and they print a nice label that has all the info needed. I stick that on the can, add a business card and cover both with a wide clear tape ( like the kind on a dispenser for packaging). Like it was mentioned, I put in a box with foam brush. Customers love it.

Re: Labeling Paint Cans

My paint stores mark the formula on the can itself, I just sharpie the room on it and leave the can.... your way sounds pretty fancy though!

Re: Labeling Paint Cans

If the customer has picked out their colors, I write the color and sheen on the contract. I also have the paint store put their name on the receipt.
No need to even go in the garage to look at cans when they have the info on the paperwork.
I still use a sharpie on the top of the cans, and down the side ... just in case the lid rusts.

Yeah, I find it really important. It's saved me quite a few times. Mine is a table and each line is labeled "Paint #1" and so on and then that is used in the description of the scope of work. I list the product, color name and number, and sheen as well. Most of the time, the color box is left blank until they finally decide on a color at the signing (as everything else is done on the computer. I have THEM right the color and number on both their and my contract.

The first time I did this, I had a homeowner that went back and forth on colors. She finally decided on one and I had her write it in. After I was done, she said that wasn't the color she picked. I showed her the contract and that was the end of that. If I hadn't put it in the contract, I would have been out paint and a day of work.
