Killing The Smell

Hello to all!!

We just started a new house today and its a biggy...the client has demanded General Paint products to be used and won't consider changing to anything else....I have to admit we don't use General ever maybe 3 or 4 times in the last 7 years, reason being its very potent in the smelly department!!...
my question is is there any tricks to lesson the smell other then wearing a mask? speeking of masks how many painters wear them using latex?

Thanks for any input before hand!!!

Re: Killing The Smell

We normally don't use mask but, when called for, we will use the canister mask. As for the Q, i have no tricks for lessening the odor.

Not familiar with general paint products. If it is a latex I would add one table spoon of vanila to a gallon of paint works for other latex paints. Add it shortly before use it seems like it quits working if added a couple of days ahead. Kind of smells like a cake. I do this when working in an office environment allways some one who keeps complaining about the paint smell. After adding vanila people mention the nice smell.

Re: Killing The Smell

Just as Jim said, a little vanila extract works well. Back in the early 80's I experimented with all kinds of scents. In your local super market you can find dozens of extract flavors ... not just vanila. The idea hit me when I was painting a difficult client's kitchen. She said she wanted the walls to be "ALMOND".

I picked up a gallon of BenMor AquaGlo - color - ALMOND. She said it wasn't "almondy" enough. I took it back to the store, and staired at the can with the kid behind the counter. He shot a little tint into it, shook it, wrote all over the can with a magic marker "ALMOND" - "ALMOND" - ALMOND". I went to the store and grabbed a bottle of Almond Extract, and poured it in, shook it up, and put some on the wall. She said it was perfect ... and even smelled a little like almond.

After that, I experimented with pine, fruits, and even combo's like pina colada. Be carefull not to put too much in ... my pina colada bathroom smelled for months.

It depends on the General Paint product.
They have all kinds, including "Z Coat" their zero VOC product.
Z-Coat is very good paint and it comes in all finishes.

Re: Killing The Smell

I used an additive called OdorZapp some years ago when I was using an oil primer to prep for wallpaper. It works by attaching itself to the paint molecules and making them heavy so they basically fall to the floor. I remember it being pretty effective. Here is a link:

I've sometimes lit candles in the house.
Works in the ****ter [oops "bathroom"], and there's some potent vapors in there!
