Iron Railings

Need to paint a couple of iron railings, where the paint is failing and the bare spots are rusting. After power washing, wire brushing, scraping, etc, what is the best primer to use to cover the rust spots? What kind of top coat should I use?

Hit it with ospho, then a couple coats of DTM.

Re: Iron Railings

Rustoleum. IMO

But than again my profession is not painting, might do it 3x or 4x a year. But I came up in general construction working with my father, and whenever we installed a speed rail or iron handrail we always used Rustoleum primer, and Rustoleum finish. But 99% of the colors we used were Black,Silver,Yellow, and Blue for a buncha Burger King chains.

Re: Iron Railings

Forget about rustoleum. Best product that I have ever come across is Rust Destroyer. It has a 5 year guarantee if used properly. It converts existing rust to an inert substance. It is oil based, and you will have to wait 24 hours to topcoat with an oil based product. If you want to use a acrylic product, you must wait 72 hours after it is applied. Another thing- it only comes in a red color.

Good luck
