Interior Paint This Expensive?

So I was killing time at a Ace hardware. I was looking at the paints. Their Benjamin Moore Regal pearl/aqua something like that was going for $54.99 a gallon!!!!!!!

I've never seen paint that expensive! Is this like the top of the line stuff or what?

Re: Interior Paint This Expensive?

Ace is "not the place".... to buy paint...

I was in a pinch one time and I needed an extra roller cover... The closest place to the job was Ace hardware store and they charged me $ 7.49 for ONE wooster 1/2 roller cover!!!!!

They mark-up like crazy!!!

Re: Interior Paint This Expensive?

Ya i noticed that their BIN primer was like 26 intead of the usual 22. 4 bucks for a mark up?

Still that would make the paint around 48 or so for the usual price? Thats still pretty expesnive.

Ace "is not he place" I gotta remember that one.

Re: Interior Paint This Expensive?

yes Ace has the Regal line way high marked up but normally they do offer discounts to Painters. I buy all my P&L at my local hardware store in which is an Ace dealer, I actually get a discount which makes my paint lower in price then other Moore dealers near me. So its like any store you go to on a regular basis they more you get to know them the better off you are.

That price you quote seems a little high compare to the Aces in the Chicago area, but who knows how there pricing works. I do not buy any sundries there tho as I buy all my stuff online or pro shows in bulk, the best way to get rollers, brushes etc.. So next time your in an Ace feel free to ask for the manager and they might cut you a deal to continue you coming in for more.

BTW most non Ace Moore dealers have Regal line marked up for homeowners way off the charts too!

Re: Interior Paint This Expensive?

Yeah i am sure we all have had to get something out of an Ace at one time or another. If it is a one time stop and you have to have right then then you have to suck it up. Now if this is where you will be doing most of your shopping then MakDeco is right. Most mom and pop places will set you up with an account, and if you do go there a lot then they will give you a lot better price then shelf price. You know, just like the paint store does. Just about the only thing in a paint store that does'nt get dropped in price to much are sprayers. And even those they come down a tiny bit. Yet if you are a HO and walk in off the street you pay the markup price.

Yes, it's true . . . Benjamin Moore Regal is THAT expensive. I use this stuff all the time and truly think it is one of the highest quality paints. Excellent coverage. If you purchase the paint from a supplier, vs. a "big box" store, you should be eligible for a business discount.

Re: Interior Paint This Expensive?

It is their (BM) top of the line
It's expensive, but your Ace is adding an extra 10+ bucks to what it should be

$54.95 is the going rate for SW Duration out here though
That's about the highest I usually have to deal with for that type of thing

Re: Interior Paint This Expensive?

Even though I don't use Ace paint very often - I really like the paint very much - Ace is the 4th largest manufacturer of paint in North America - putting it ahead some very well known brands. And they have a good team of chemists working hard to make their paints really good. I am really impressed by their exterior royal shields line of primers and paints. More so the paints. Some one put it to me this way once. Ace is really a paint store that hides under the guise of being a hardware store - and it's true, they get people in there based on all their inventory - but they make their real money from selling their own paints. Imagine if they really got half serious with it, hired a full time professional for the paint department manager - instead of the random help - a contractor's desk - and contractor pickup in the back. Ace stock would go through the roof. Because with a professional paint manager - prices would come back way into line for professionals.
The thing I hate about them the most isn't the high prices, it's the inconsistency. They will sell their ceiling paint for like $22 after having sold it for $19 - and now back to $17. Or my favorite primer that was like $12/gallon - I went back yesterday and it was like $22/gallon. With a professional manager - that would be gone.

I agree with you. All tho I do not use Ace brand paints, they sell P&L in which I use. Most Ace's now in the Chicago area carry the BM Regal line. A larger Ace here has like 9 stores and has buying power outside the Ace warehouse and has started carrying BM Super Spec line at decent prices and Sikkens products. This Ace with the nine stores offers there painters 25% off Ace Paint, BM and Cabot products. I am at 20% for P&L. The store I use is a mom and pop store w/o the extra buying power.

Also my store has didicated person in the paint department till 5 6 pm every day after that it is the part timers that you mention that may the department.

I love the smaller stores and try to help them out as much as possible.

Not sure where your located but Aura is out in that many places yet. I also don't think that BM is going to bring out a new product and let Ace carry it right away. IMO

Re: Interior Paint This Expensive?

Folks in these parts drink BM Regal for breakfast. Now to get their neighbours stomachs a griping they put Farrow & Ball Gloss on their walls for $110/gallon. Though that is an imperial gallon.

Re: Interior Paint This Expensive?

Wow I believe you, check out the site:

http://www.farrow-ball.com

It goes for about $30 a .75 liter, which is about 0.2 gallons, so 110 sounds about right for a full gallon. Holy *****!

Is it all just markup, or is the paint blessed by the pope or something?
