Infrared Heater?

Wondering if anyone has used or seen one of these puppies in use ----

http://www.eco-strip.com/ProdStripper.html.
I do a lot of exterior paint removal from clapboard siding using the Pro-Shaver: love the speed, not so much the dust.

Couple of concerns:
1 - fragile bulbs
2 - practical to hold 4 lbs approx machine against siding for 20 secs or more.

Thanks

Re: Infrared Heater?

I made my own, but it needs fine tuning and better grounding for the wiring (it is a little too shocking right now). It does work well. I have only used it for doors or smaller areas. I have not tried it on a house or very large area. I am leaning towards just buying one instead of using my homemade version. Check out this link: http://www.oceanmanorhouse.com/paintremover.html. This is where I got the idea to make my own.

Re: Infrared Heater?

I own three silent paint removers and I think they are the best way to strip a house without doing a lot of dusty grinding or shaving. It is the most lead safe way to do it if you ask me.

I will say this, It is better at removing old paint then new. If you have a house that has had a recent scrape and paint then it doesnt work so good on areas that were sanded to bare wood and then given one coat of new paint.

Re: Infrared Heater?

I have heard of stripping houses by spraying on stripper and letting it sit overnight. Anyone try it that way before?

Re: Infrared Heater?

Yes I have. Miserable experience both times- hated it. The first time many years ago in Berkeley CA. Sprayed chemical, let it sit overnight, sprayed neutralizer, then pressure wash next day- easy right? Wrong.

Though neutralized and safe, the mess looked bad, and neighbors called the police on me without even talking to us first. Still needed tons of work afterward.

Second time we used newer product. SPread, apply plastic, remove. Still a ton of work afterward.

No more. Heat guns or sanding work better...

Re: Infrared Heater?

DaVinci,

What precautions do you take against getting airborne lead dust with sanders and heat guns?

San Fancisco dictates that you pretty much need to wrap the entire house in plastic, plus double tape the windows. I'm starting to think it's more trouble than it's worth.

Have you taken that Lead abatement course in Alameda?
