For the quickie one or two day jobs, I've been using this ratio. Unless its someone I do a lot of business with, then I just invoice them after its all over. I give 'em 20 days to pay... they always pay, and I get more work. Works out well with established customers.

Usually a 50% deposit. I've bought materials before without getting any money or signature, and have gotten burned every time, I've leasrned my lesson. Would love to trust people, but it can't be done. I do get people that want to give me a deposit at the estimate, but I won't even take money without something in writing.

any project under $1,000, the customer pays for labor and materials when the job is complete, otherwise, i get half the labor and all material costs upfront, remaining 50% paid when job is complete.
