How Much To Charge For Staining Wood
I have a customer that the trim around the door and base board has been stained but also has a coat of clear poly. The customer wants to darken the look. Should I remove all existing varinish/stain. Then apply conditioner, stain, and poly. Do I charge by the LF. (Project in Texas)

depending on the style of the moulding, it might be cheaper and easier to remove the existing and replace with new. To restain yes, you need to remove all the clear finsh. And yes charge by the foot. I'm in an area where depending on finsh,I charge two to five timesthe cost of the trim installed.
good luck! |

Re: How Much To Charge For Staining Wood
The poly must be removed
Unless it's being painted it's almost always more cost efficient to replace the trim

You can tint the urethane by adding stain to it if the color change isn't too drastic. Then clear coat over. Of course you need to sand and tack before and in between coats.

Re: How Much To Charge For Staining Wood
Depending on what the finish is you can stain over the top of an old finish. Lacquers you can, Poly's you can, but you can't brush anything over the top of the stain. Your finish has to be sprayed.
I use a two-brush method. One on, one off, with a rag to pull the exess stain out of the 'off' brush. By working your off brush, with the grain, against the grain, with the grain you can create a darker, more developed finish. Leave it to completely dry, then spray at least 2 coats over the top. It is generally cheaper to replace the trim, btw, unless you're doing a large amount. I'd charge by the sq ft just like you would a faux. You can also use glaze to create the same effect, but it is more difficult to get the right consistency with glaze. |
