How Many Guys Clean Out Your Rollers?

While at a Ben Moore event recently, I was shocked to here a few guys
cleaning and re- useing their roller naps. I think It's a waist of time (for me to do it anyways) I mean, whats it take 5... 10 minutes? I charge almost $5.00 per 10 minutes an hour. plus the mess.... I only wrap them if I'm going to use the same color again.. or drop them in a bucket of paint...
I never clean them ... and I use purdy 3/8

Whats everyone elses opinion?

I always clean my rollers. But thats because I use expensive german style rollers. They last long and they are much easier to clean compared to your regular north american style nap.

Re: How Many Guys Clean Out Your Rollers?

I used to clean em out to use for oil ceilings, and various zinsers, but as of late, it's hard to find the time. Bought that roller washer gimick, in case my daughter felt like earning her allowance for once, but it's never been used once in the four months I've had it....

I hope that it doesn't take more than one guy to clean out your rollers.

Re: How Many Guys Clean Out Your Rollers?

I pitch them. They're added into the price so I won't lose no sleep over the couple dollar nap. When doing the same color over the next couple days though I'll keep them unless they are worn out.

The guy I work for most the time though... I strongly believe he's still using the same nap from the 90s. Don't ever let him see you toss one out. Ahhhhh yes our walls are so smooth I tell you. Only need to backroll them 4 times.

Re: How Many Guys Clean Out Your Rollers?

I'll clean them sometimes, though not always
They run 6.5 to 8 bucks
I always like to have a few cleaned, used ones in the box
The cleaned, used wool or 50/50 sleeve is my go-to problem solving & touch-up sleeve
If I can't get those to roll nice, then I know it's the paint

When I'm doing a big interior and have tons of different colors, I'll wrap each nap and keep them until the jobs done, then toss them. If I clean any, I tend to clean 18" naps, for obvious rea$on$.

So, typically-no.

If I use them real quick or some 18"ers-yes.

Being mostly a one man show, I clean or pitch at will, honestly. Depends if I'm in a pinch for time, or if I'm just tired to death. Some times I'll dunk em down in the 5 and snap the lid on through a job. I don't make saving money on naps a priority though because cleaning properly is time consuming.

Re: How Many Guys Clean Out Your Rollers?

I posted this a long time ago but a trip through the washing machine will make them as good as new. Pre rinse first to get most of the paint out. I

If your a pro, the cost of a cheap machine could be a good investment. I just sneak them in when O'l#2 ain't lookin'.

I've never heard of or thought of this. Can't be worse than washing my whites, so I might try it.

Re: How Many Guys Clean Out Your Rollers?

It depends, but basically like everyone here said.

We wrap them if the color is to be used again in other areas.

If their decent purdy's or a higher quality brand then I'll chuck them in a 5'gallon busket(suicide kings momento) of water let them sit and do a final squeeze and rinse. I have so many that I always keep the van with stack of newbies and oldies.

Then there are times that I'm like "ah screw it I'm done for the day!" LOL.

Yeah they are sort of snuck in
Yeah, it's worse then whites
I sneak them in before I wash my whites
Then the whites go in right away

Also
Outside with a hose and spin them still on the cage (Rooster Tail)
Slip them over the Whizz spinner and spin them in a 5 gal

I always wash the skins out being we use 1 1/2" lamb wool I buy them by the case so I get a real good deal as far as price goes, at the paint store they run around 10.95 and up. so we wash them I get 6 to 9 months out of one skin.

Re: How Many Guys Clean Out Your Rollers?

There is a roller cover cleaner made of clear plastic with two black plastic endcaps ya screw a hose onto it,the water is forced thru the nap,not thru the core...works damn well ! cleans a 3/4 inch polyester skin in about 4 minutes,so is it worth it to not wash them using this method ? (And they now make one for 18 inch covers, pays for itself in a few cover cleanings)
