How Long Will I Be Out?

I got into an accident last friday... suffered a broken rib and a seperated shoulder..... Problem is ... I'm a small company that has me doing 99% of the painting. I have landed alot of buisness lately and am backed up at least 3 months... how long do you think I'll be out? has anyone else gone thru this? I've contacted all my customers and reschedualed for july 10th
am I crazy? will I be able to move a ladder in a month?

Re: How Long Will I Be Out?

It depends on your age and fitness level.
When I was around 40 - 42 I fractured both bones in my forearm. I took a week off then strapped it and went back to work. These days I break a bit easier and take longer to heal.

Re: How Long Will I Be Out?

Depends on your tolerance to pain also. I have 3 herniated discs in my back, L 2-3, L 3-4, and S-1. My lower back will actually dislocate and move out of place to where it looks like my top half is detached and sitting beside where my legs stand....and I still work. It's extremely painful, but after 11 years of it being like this, I can deal pretty good. I love the looks I get from some people when they see my back out, and me still working. Broken bones, there's no telling how long till you can take it again. Ribs can be a b*tch. When my back goes out it often pulls the muscles in my chest which makes it impossible to breath....it squeezes the breath right back out of you.

My decision to go back to work would be as soon as I could buck up and deal with the pain...I can't sit too long.

Oh Ya.. well once I broke a finger nail and kept on working. Thought about taking time off to heal, but Mrs. Ron just trimmed it a little and I was fine

Re: How Long Will I Be Out?

Aw jeez, sorry to hear that man
No lunch at the ferry today then eh?

Ribs....ribs are tough man
You did the right thing
A month is good
You'll know better in three and a half weeks if you have to push it off a few more weeks
You'll have to play it by ear though

I've never broken them, but I've bruised them pretty bad
Straight up man they took a long time to heal
-definitely got sick of not doing stuff because of the pain, eventually just pushed the boundaries of my tolerance for pain and sucked it up

Good Luck

Re: How Long Will I Be Out?

My back is kind of like AA Paints and happened in 89 with a full schedule of work. I couldn't wipe myself for 6 weeks (took lots of showers) and it ened up being one of the best things that ever happened to me.

I had heard this older guy a PDCA meeting talking to another guy and told him how he had made a 6 figure income in the paint business for the last 20-30 years, and he had never even opened a can of paint. He continued on that the only way to make real money in this world is to invest every nickel that you can in the right places, OR have other people earn it for you.

Well, his words rang very loud when I knew that I wouldn't be working for at least 6 weeks, and would probably never be the same again.

That injury, my brother teaching me how to use a computer, and switching to piecework, are the big three that changed my life in the painting world forever and for the better. I still paint evey now and then, but it sure reminds me by noon that I am not in my teens, 20's or 30's any more!

My beliefs is that life throws all sorts of stuff at you and although 1 million paths may even be predetermined for you, you still have to choose the path, and/or play the cards that you are dealt. And that decision, will affect the next path/decison, and on and on and...........

We become whatever we THINK we will become.

Your injury might be an eye opener for you, or a well deserved break that you needed, or..... Whatever it is, I hope everyhting turns out well for you.

Paul

Re: How Long Will I Be Out?

You are the only one that can assess this. I broke 3 ribs and worked for days until I realised that it wasn't getting better. The CAT scan revealed that I'd also bruised my liver.

I never did stop working, just took it easy for a few weeks.
