How To Get Rid Of Popcorn!

Okay out here we have just about no popcorn ceiling (lucky me!)

But this is my first job, and I think the customer is going to want me to remove it.

So my question is what is the best removal method you guys have come across?

I saw those scraps at lowes that you can put a grocery bag on, any good so I won't make a mess?

I have one
It doesn't work well and it's still messy
It sits on my shelf and every once in a while I move it
But I don't use it
I found it to be much quicker and more effective to just dive in and get messy

Seem that it still always comes down to elbow grease and a big mess. We mist the stuff with water from a pump sprayer and just scrape it carefully with drywall knives. Cover the carpet with visqueen tucked under the baseboards just like the carpet is, then lay drop cloths over the visqueen.

I think you need to tape off and drape everything with plastic down to and including the floor and then scrape the first time dry to get a lot of it off. Then you can spray some water on it the second time to get the rest off. Garden sprayer works but I've heard of some people using a hose with the sprayer in the "light mist" mode.

Be aware of when the original popcorn was put up. Odds are is isn't, but it might contain asbestos.

Yup!

Also be prepared to retape and skim the drywall.

Lots of time (read: $) to get the ceilings flat again.

I should have mentioned that sometimes it's just cheaper to put up a new layer of rock!

Be careful where the ceiling meets the walls. Unless you're painting the walls anyway.

Re: How To Get Rid Of Popcorn!

Carpet can be a real pain to work on top of. If i am going to be at at a ob for a awhile or am doing drywall or popcorn ceiling removal - i cover the carpets with this http://www.pro-tect.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=25
It costs a bit but it sure makes life easy.
