How Do You Spray A Room - New Construction?

Hello guys..

I plan to rent an airless sprayer and spray a small house. I have never sprayed before. The owner's a friend so he's allowing me to do it. The ceilings and walls will need to be sprayed and new drywall throughout. I need some basic direction.

What are the steps in preparing the room and how do you spray it???

What are the steps in preparing the room?
a) remove everything from the room
b) the ceilings are white and walls are beige...do I tape and mask off walls first and spray ceilings first and then tape and mask off ceilings and spray walls second?
c) I will tape off window opennings
d) Do I cover the entire floors with paper?
e) Do I remove doors or just cover them off?
f) What is the best material to use to cover, tape off opennings.....paper or plastic or something else.

How do you spray the room?
a) Do I start from the ceiling first?
b) With the spray gun do I start in the corner and do the edges first and then go back and forth along the ceiling area, from corner to corner?
c) Do I back roll....and how heavy should my roller be with pain - light or med.

These are general questions....I know it will be trial and error and experimentation. I can't find a video or good resource that I can watch or read about..maybe someone can recommend a good resource.

Thanks for the help.

This is not a good situation for you, not trying to be rude but you'd be better off just rolling/brushing the house. If it was all one color on the ceilings and walls then it would be OK to spray, but for a novice, I can just picture the results.

Another thing, spraying new drywall creates a very fuzzy feel and look to the surface. If you backroll the spray work you'll be much better for it. Again, spray work is learned over time, especially quality spray work.

just roll that puppy,,,,,,,finished floors, white lids, off white walls,,,,,,this is not a job id spray,,,,,,you could set up, cut and roll and have less headaches by the time you bag everything off and squirt it.

Re: How Do You Spray A Room - New Construction?

I have a painter who sprays almost all my work. His method is to spray the ceiling first, allowing overspray down onto the walls, then mask off the ceiling corner and spray the walls. I agree with the above post, which really is to back roll, you are going to need to do it if you are inexperienced. I own a sprayer for large flat stuff such as our sea containers, trailers, and old garage structures and I can tell you, getting good at it takes time.

Go for it, just keep that roller handy, better yet have someone follow behind and back roll all of it.

good luck!

Re: How Do You Spray A Room - New Construction?

I appreciate all the response...even those that are discouraging me to do it. I don't take that as negative feedback....only realistic feedback from experienced guys...so thanks. I realize that spraying is an art and takes time. That's why I plan do it at my friends house....a "safe" environment to practice in. I suspect that I will double my labor time just to prep the room and figure out how to do it. I have to start somewhere....and this is the perfect situation. I have never liked the idea of spraying....always did brush and roll...but I feel I need to increase production time...learn how to do something better and more efficient, especially ceiling repaints.

Thanks

OK, "Z",

We weren't all born knowing how to paint. I learned from watching others. I started my own business way too early in my career, so I hired people ... one guy at a time ... who knew how to do what I didn't. They taught me for a few days on client's houses, I paid them, and I got paid by the home owners.
Hire a teacher, and make a little money while you learn. It's like getting paid to go to school, and you will get a few referals along the way. It's a WIN-WIN.

You are 100% correct and this is what I will do. In fact this is how I learned the basics of painting...I worked for a commerical crew...for free...watched, learned and did the painting. From what I am strongly reading and hearing from the members of this forum is that spraying is a special skill requiring a certain amount of expertise and skill. So I will seek out someone in the local area. Thanks for the suggestion.

I would just spray the ceiling and walls at the same time using ceiling paint or primer. This will be your topcoat on your ceiling and your first coat on the walls acting as primer (if you used ceiling paint). Start with the ceiling then work the walls and don't be afraid to backroll the heck out of it. If you need two coats on the ceiling, spray/backroll agian in opposite direction. Sand walls and roll on color.

Ya don't start with the ceiling, then go to the walls!!!

That's how you end up with 80 grit sandpaper for drywall on the walls.

The overspray drifts down, and collects on the dust, and burnt drywall areas from where the taper sanded, and dries.

Always do the bottom first! And, roll the heck out of it!

Don't paint the corners twice ... you will end up with too much paint ... and the corners will crack.

LEARN IT WITH YOUR EYES AND HANDS FROM SOMEONE WHO KNOWS!

Just open the can...make a spraying noise...and shoot it all over the room.

P.S back brush.

BTW:

When you "prime the pump" ... don't use primer.
