Hourly Rate-Feel Free To Stay Anonymous

What do ya'll charge. I know, I know it depends on what you do and where you live, but I'm just curious to see the 'variance' if there really is one. I'll be honest~I'm between $30-40, for now anyway.
Note: this will only be accurate if painters are polling

I can't make it in Northern NJ without 50-60.
Cost of living warrants it.

You are right on target! I would however do more of the 35-40 than a 30-35.

Staying on the low side of $30= for now until my name gets around----

Around here, even the rich can't afford a plumber!

I even had a lady ask if I could install a sink. "What part of painter gave me away, lady?"

You do own a pair of pliers, don't you? What else could you possibly need? It looks so easy in the book from Home Depot!

Re: Hourly Rate-Feel Free To Stay Anonymous

I didn't vote in the pole, but I have a couple of questions.

What does a union painter make in your area? What kind of overhead does a typical painting contractor have? On a $30 hr billable charge, how much does a typical painter make as net income for themselves?

It seems to me, that after all is said and done, a $30/hr billable rate, coupled with fairly low material markup (or none at all if the customer provides the paint) would leave the typical one man painting contractor with a net pay of around $15-20/hr.

Doesn't seem like much for the aggrevation of running a business. Am I way off?

You are about right with $30/hr leaving you with 15-20/hr. It depends how you want to figure overhead for a one man show, but if I include truck payment (we are a 2 vehicle family including the work truck), auto, liability, health insurance, some budgeting for larger tool purchases, cell phone, internet, gas for truck, figure a couple weeks for "paid" vacation, and some other stuff, I come up with $15/ hr in overhead costs.

No matter where you go or what you see on TV it's always the plumber thats comes to mind I always wondered way? It is always thought the plumbers and lawyers are rich, oh how I wish this was so.

I did not take the poll but I will tell you we charge on the very high end of the other.

I love you man!...plumbers are one of the most paid ones out there. It's got a lot to do with the 'on call' thing, that some offer, I'm sure. Not trying to to say your rich, I know it's all about lifestyles and responsibilities and such.

Re: Hourly Rate-Feel Free To Stay Anonymous

I have always wondered why the electricians never get mentioned, every once in awhile they get talked of but not as much as plumbers. It's funny, if something went wrong on a jobsite it's the plumber that did it.

Maybe it's easier to say plumber then to say electrician, lets see, (plumb-er) two syllables,(e -lec-tri-cian) four syllables Thats it I see it now.

Hey, electricians are like the marines of a job - first ones in, last ones out. So please don't transfer the fact that plumbers get $5000 to bury an empty pipe 100' from the house to the street, vs electricians only getting $3500 for that same conduit filled with wire and then the rest of the service included.

We are here to make fun of painters for not charging near enough

Aren't the painters the last ones out?

Ron-take pride that your trade is one of the most paid out there, I know electricians are up there as well, sometimes making as much or more....any tradesman is an artist in my opinion dispite the money....

after all havent we all said at one point, "ehh, hire a taper/mudder for that one, it would take me 10 times as long as them"....and they are one of the least paid.....

When it comes to undergrounds utilities, true, but in top out phase, plumbers are 1st in, it least here we are.

Now it's not that our bills are pricey due to labor, it's the cost of material, some things cost hundreds of dollars. Where as in paint, paint will very in cost, I admit there not charging enough out there, for the cost of living today, I'm surprised painters are not at least the min of $60 per hour.
