High Gloss Paint Help

Hey Guys,

I have a customer who called me about blemishes on her walls. i am not a painter but i have done alot of work for her so i guess she wanted my opion. The walls have a high gloss hunter green paint which shows every texture variation on the sheetrock behind it !!! I mean every, when the sun hits it directly it does look nasty. is there a trick or rule when dealing with gloss paint (other than a good spackle job.) And how would you fix it now?

Thanks,

Duncan

Re: High Gloss Paint Help

When my customers choose Gloss for their walls I warn them about the imperfections that will be brought out. I have found dark colors to be even harder as areas cut in with the brush that have a slightly different texture even show when looking from the side or into the sun, Even overlaps with the roller can show to the fussy customer.
I have found that if the walls are not primed it can be worse.

That sounds about right
Really, no kidding
High gloss is bad enough, but hunter green....it was doomed to show every imperfection

On a wall?...I try to avoid it at all costs
I strongly recommend against it, and if I had a customer insist, I would have them sign a waiver
That being said I do have commercial accounts where I'll use gloss for clean-up reasons, but it's not a living room you know, and they are fine with that

...huh...fix it....well if you mean make it look better then it's repaint time
If the wall truly is too rough then a good sanding, a skim coat of joint compound, possibly more, possibly priming (depending on how much/ how bad/ etc.)

Then some good quality satin/eggshell/flat paint
If it MUST be gloss, then at least the wall is as good as can be now

Ill get to the point here. You have two options,

1) Repaint the wall in a lower gloss ie: semi-gloss or eggshell

2) spend a hell of alot of time with joint compound and sanders to get the wall absolutely perfect.

Re: High Gloss Paint Help

Basic rule of thumb.

Gloss accentuates everthing.

Flats hide everything.

The same applies to surfaces. Flat surfaces will show imprefections while textured surfaces cover them up.

When I walk into a home with texured walls, I'm gone.

Thats funny. I think texture walls look cheap. I prefer eggshell. Is that considered flat or not. I really don't understand how that works with paint.

Eggshell is a type of sheen. Basically a satin sheen. It goes like this flat, matte, satin or eggshell, semi-gloss, high gloss for the most part anyway.
