I put on a latex primer coat which is a fire retardant, on a new build drywall. The HO was going to put on top coat of paint. it cracked. He was using Olympic Premium ceiling latex flat. Can anyone tell me why it cracked?

cracking paint
Mostly fine lines. I believe it is referred to as aligatoring. Do you mean the cracking coat is to thick, or the primer under it. The primer went on good, smooth with no cracks.
Thanks

You are safe. The application of the primer should have nothing to do with it. Cheaper flat paint put on too thick can do that.

Sounds to me like they've second coated before their first coat has dried properly.

I agree that what has happened is that the first coat was not dry and when the 2nd coat went on it had nothing to adhere to because it shifts back and forth on the wet 1st coat thus causing it to alligator...

Some of the painting was done by a "professional painter" who told me he painted one direction, the went back and painted the other direction as soon as he was finished with the first coat. He said he always does it that was and never has any problems.

Ha ha...wet on wet with a crappy paint
There's your answer
You can also play a few rounds of Russian Roulette and "never have any problems"
That doesn't mean it's a good idea to play Russian Roulette

Went back over as soon as he was done, how big was the room/house. I might not wait the hours the can says to do another coat but I dont do it immediatly, Atleast go to lunch or something. If you dont mind my asking if the guy is a pro why did you apply the primer and not him, and why didnt you apply the paint if you applied the primer.

I am a dealer of No Burn Fire Retardant products. We carry a latex primer which is fire retardant. The primer is my product. Thats why I put it on and someone else put on the top coat. I tried to put on a link to my web site, but this site wouldn't let me until I post 15 times. If you are interested in more info let me know.

If it is a new product it may have some flaws. Just because it may come from a good brand doesnt mean it is a good product. I typically dont try stuff they throw out there. Many products that we have today have been secrectly reworked several times to become the top notch products they are now. For example, SW Resiliance is a good product but here in a couple years it will be great probably. If you are that concerned and are pushing the product buy a sheet of drywall, take it home and experiment.

Thanks for the advise. Actually the product has been around for at least ten years. It is a tried and true, top quality product. I am a new dealer. The next time I apply it, I will apply it to a new sheet of drywall, and get the paint they intend to use to try over it. Again thanks for the advise.

Shayter, what is in the product might be the problem it sounds like the Olympic paint may have counter acted with your product causing it to crack, kinda like latex over oil base paint it aint gonna stick. maybe the painter should have pole sanded the surface before appling the paint, I mean we always sand our primer coat before we paint our finish.
