I just spray it...if that's what you're asking.

Re: Hardie Plank?

Yeah, thats what I was asking but it just seems like spraying makes such a mess and its alot of prep to spray an exterior. Ever tried rolling it? Wonder how it would go.

Re: Hardie Plank?

Rolling would go extremely slow for what you're talking about and you will work yourself to death. Spraying exteriors is very easy once you get the hang of it. Learn to use a shield, the right size tip, and avoid windy days you'll have no prob.

Get yourself a bunch of huge cardboard boxes and use pieces of those for shields...or better yet if you can find those big 4x8 sheets of corrugation like they use in shipping to cover pallets. You can cut one to fit absolutely any shape you need in just a few seconds right on the spot. You can wrap a box around an area you are spraying and box in the overspray, or you can do it the other way and box in say a flood light while you spray around it. The cardboard can cover far more than a standard spray shield, so your worries of blowback in corners is also reduced by just using a bigger peice of cardboard. Say you're spraying soffits, and there's a dang wire that won't let you put your shield flush to the fascia...just cut a little notch and move on...

It's all about efficiency. The faster we complete something, the sooner we can move on to the next project...means we can make more money. Our prep to spray an exterior means setting up the pump and getting the cardboard and ladders ready to go.

Hey, it's my 1,000th post!!

Re: Hardie Plank?

I buy mine pre-stained with a 15 year color warranty so they don't need to be painted. Sorry painters, it also osaves the customer alot of money. From what I have read, paint should not be used. Solid color stains should be used instead. That's what the pre-finish factories use for "painting".

Re: Hardie Plank?

Paint is just fine on hardi board if it's applied properly. I've yet to see a problem from painting it because paint adheres extremely well to that stuff. Solid stains don't offer half the color choices that paint does, and it will eventually end up getting painted if they want more than just 8 color choices.

Q: Do I have to paint Hardiplank siding? A: Yes, Hardiplank lap siding must be painted or you may order many James Hardie products coated with the The ColorPlus™ Collection by James Hardie factory finishing and coloring system. If painting, for best results use Hardiplank with our exclusive PrimePlus™ factory priming system along with one top coat of 100% acrylic paint. For specific recommendations, please refer to JH Technical Bulletin No. S-100 or contact the paint manufacturers for their specifications. Hardiplank with the PrimePlus™ system is required to be painted within 180 days of installation.

The ColorPlus Collection by James Hardie comes in 8 standard colors that result in a finished siding product that will not crack, chip or peel. The standard finishes are warranted for 15 years

Gives a 25 year guarantee on painted finish.
http://www.superdeck.com/masonsselect/6700spec.htm
Warranty of 12 years on the stained with a limited # of hues.

I had them do a mahogany stain on some (haven't installed yet) and they are doing a painted job for me right now - Cocoa for trim and Autumn Sand for siding. The stained runs about $1.72 / sf for material and finish. Painted is about $1.38 / sf (that's installed square footage).

Re: Hardie Plank?

On small stuff, 2 coats primer and 2 topcoats. I don't like the supplied primer, it sucks up the new stuff like a sponge.

I offer my customer ANY color cabot or Olympic soild stains. They have hundreds of choices. Don't tell my competitors that, they think they can only get the 8 off the shelf colors.

In my area all hardie and weatherboards come pre primed. You can not buy them bare even if you wanted to.

They also don't sell cabot or olympic stained siding either. You just have to know where to look. I would also like to add that my personal prefrence for fibercement is Certainteed Weatherboards.

Back to the original question, if I were to have to stain ths stuff I'd prefer to pre stain it myself before installation or if it had to be pained after, shake siding like this would be a B to do anything but spray.
