Grain Bins And Metal Buildings
There is a local guy that did most grain bins and farm buildings around here. He is retiring and has been referring most work to me. Does anyone know a ballpark pricing for either of these. Do most people do it per square foot. I will be washing then priming and painting. Anyone have any experience with this. Is it worth getting into?

Why not ask your retiring friend what he charges, and how he comes up with his prices?

Not really a friend I guess. Just a local guy. He know i am a painter so he is just referring people. I plan on talking to him. However, he has kinda a reputation of doing things halfway with local farmers. I want to know it is done right.

Talk to the guy anyway. get his view on things. Farmers are very, very frugal and they hate getting the barns and outbuildings painted.
Your friend has probably tried to do the work while surviving the experience. I don't know about grain elevators, just barns and such. It's a long way from residential or commercial. You'll need trucks to get to the buildings, major equipment to reach everything and a huge rig to spray them. Sorry, I can't tell you any more about it. Maybe your friend is willing to sell you his equipment. |

Re: Grain Bins And Metal Buildings
He really didn't get into huge elevators or anything. I have a gas rig and a fairly good sized electric. Spraytech 2555. I don't think he had anything bigger than that. He does have a bucket truck. I would need to invest in that. I know farmers hate to spend money. There is a crew of guys that come around from the south somewhere about once every five years. Farmers love them because they are cheap. However, three years later the paint is washed off. Convincing them that if they do it the right way it may be able to go 10 years before needing anything is difficult. I am planning a meeting with this guy soon.

I can't give you any info on pricing. If you get into it be careful of the overspray. A guy painted the grain bins at a local place and oversprayed every car within about 1000 yards of the bins. I can't imagine his insurance company was vary happy

Good luck with this. Let us know how it goes.
It's a tough deal. I like farmers and have friends who grew up farming, but man, when it comes to this....... |

Also check with your insurance guy, make sure your covered in respects to the scope of the work and the height you may be working at. Just food for thought.
