Graco 390 D.O.A., Twice!

I bought a brand new 390 the other day at a reputable paint dealer. When trying to flush the shipping oil out with mineral spirits, the motor was kicking off the breaker. This was plugged straight into solid 120 volts.

I explained this to the service center tech and he said he has heard of problems with the boards (printed circuit) on these.

No, problem- I pick up another one today, no questions asked. Same problem!

I'm returning it tomorrow to get my money back and getting the Titan.

Has anyone heard of this? If not, beware. It looks like Graco new about the problem, but hasn't spread the fix throughout- that is, if they even have one.

Have you tried plugging it into another circuit? There could have been enough load on the one you were using to cause an overload when you started your machine.

I'd also try another one and try a different circut. How can you get 2 bad ones in a row?? I've had a graco390 for 10 or 12 years now, they are basically indestructabe.About every 4 years I have to put a packing kit in it and thats it.All I spray out of mine is latex primers and latex topcoat which is the hardest material on a paint sprayer.Get your dealer to start it up and run some thinner through it.I love mine.

I too would try another circut. The 390 is a good sprayer i got one that i primarily like to use for stain work.
The new titan 440ix will out perform the 390 imo. Plus you can get one for like 8 bills with 5 free tips ect ect.

Re: Graco 390 D.O.A., Twice!

This is an old post but I have the exact same problem 4 years down the road. I bought a 390 Nova summer of 2010 for a big job painting college apartments two hours away from my home. I own a 395 and am quite pleased with it but it weighs alot more and I had to carry the machine up 4 flights of stairs. The first time I plugged this machine in it blew the circuit breaker. I finally attached an extension cord to lower the current to the circuit and it worked ok. I made it through the job blowing more circuits but surviving. I got home and tried it on my other jobs and it blew fuses in the machine. They had to be special ordered so the machine sat and SW wouldn't help me with it. It has been nothing but problems. The pump not priming well and circuit breakers blowing and fuses blowing. I probably used it for a full week. That's it ! I wouldn't recommend this machine to anyone. Graco has a good product , but not this one. This one operates on 50 hertz and that may be the problem, but not sure.

If you had taken the elevator but four flights of stairs says they don't spend alot on electricians. There are discount products a plenty now a days in every market, 6 different lines of eggshell for instance, I looked at the graco and decided the 490 had the best middle of the road value, but starting at the bottom is never a wise investment. Still got the home depot graco back up in the garage, used it twice in four years not worth the square foot of real estate much like 3 of those eggshell lines. I'll bet the new 390 is half the weight of the 15 year old one I first started with.

Re: Graco 390 D.O.A., Twice!

OK, like I said , these are college apartments and they don't spend money on elevators. The complex also supplies all paint and materials.(Glidden flat latex) They are blow and go units in between semesters. We do this this every year. Most of the guys bring highboys,(sprayer on wheels or carry little titan 440's) I've owned 3 titan 440's, but they only last the time it takes to pack three times and a couple rod replacements and they're worn out. I spray anywhere from 30 to 60 gallons a week. Titans are good machines but the graco is better. I've owned a graco 395 for around 6 years and haven't had anything done to it yet. This 390 was blowing circuits on all plugs, didn't matter what load was on the plug and most buildings were vacant. I just took the 390 back to SW this morning to have the mechanic give it another check up and then the Graco area supervisor will make a decision on whether to give me another machine or not.
