gouge i n popcorn

Say you have a situation where someone moving funiture let a corner scrape a popcorn ceiling. About a 6 to 8" gouge in the texture. What would be the best solution? Gouge just in the texture not into the rock. Came across this once. Guy I was working with said you could tell where someone had tried to repair i t by the different texture. This "different texture" I think was where someone had tried to paint over it. Slightly different tint. I have a few ideas which includes painting the whole ceiling, but would like some input from some of you more e xperienced guys.

Personally I avoided this question as much as I avoid popcorn... but you always end up with one anyhow. I'd scrape a flat spot with a 2 inch knife and re-apply texture, then paint the ceiling.

Some guys will mix a gallon of paint in every five of popcorn they mix, some don't, so whenever you patch, you have to paint. Easiest way to patch is take a kitchen sponge, mix your acoustic of the right size, and dab it into the scrape sparingly. Better drop everything within a 20 ft. radius first. Then spray the whole ceiling with a color that corresponds to the rest of the ceilings in the house. Even a little bit of difference is noticed by more difficult clients.

To fix this, I'd manually dab into it with compound, paint er in when done. The biggest problem is the straight line in the gouge. should you be able to scrape your gouge into a more abstract shape before you fix, it tends to work out better. The eye is drawn to a straight line, which in this case is bad.

I had in mind a dapping technique if I was to fix it then paint the whole ceiling, so I was on the right track. Heheh, seems like an expensive propsition for a scratch, but I know it would stand out for the ho.
