Glidden

I have been using SW and been having problems with touchup. I spray a lot of new construction. I have a good relatioship with SW. The problems began recently when they changed the formula. They have been trying to solve it, coming out to job, making a sample board to send to HQ, etc. Another paint store has offered me 60 gallons of Glidden free to get me to switch. The rep says they "garuntee" it will touch up with no problem. The prices are pretty close.
What do you think of Glidden?

Re: Glidden

Glidden still makes good paint, so long as it's real Glidden and not that Evermore junk from Home Depot. What are you spraying? Interior drywall? If you have a Pratt and Lambert dealer in your area, I'd recommend you try their Pro Hide Gold line. We've carried Glidden, Devoe, and Duron in the past. Nothing has compared to P&L PHG for coverage and touch up at very good price, at least around here.

Re: Glidden

The ICI or Glidden Ultra Hide touches up good, it think it is their mid grade. Their top of the line is Velvet Touch or Velvet Sheen, i always order by the product number so I never remember the names, it touches up pretty well also. They were carrying Ralph Lauren paint for a minute, but I think that is over with, hard to tell contractors that nobody gets a discount on a product and still expect to be able to get them to buy it. They also had This Old House brand paint for a minute, same deal, nobody gets a discount so no contractors wanted it.
They have good products and bad just like every paint retailer, but since they gave me a credit account before anyone else would, I buy the majority of my supplies from them.
They dont carry brush spinners or steelwool though, kinda weird not to carry those things, especialy the spinners, every painter has a spinner.

Re: Glidden

In my city it is the paint pretty much all of the contractors use, Sherwin is second, the Porter store looks closed most of the time because nobody goes there. I got used to ICI / Glidden when I first started out working for a guy doing new homes, I learned the products and got to know the people working their and sort of stuck with them.
My sales rep for Glidden is great and has always backed me up when there were any kind of problems.
I thought Behr was the DIYer's favorite paint, or maybe Walmart brand, I see alot of that in HO's garages these days. Doesnt really matter what brand the DIY crowd use, they always end up with wall paint on the ceiling and trim ........ and flooring ......... and toilets ........sinks ...........cabinets ....... family pets ........... children ..............................

Re: Glidden

I believe ICI has put Glidden on there home Depot deal paint. Most ICI's here in the midwest have dulux on there cans. All tho I always thought ultrahide was a good paint.

ICI always make Ralph Lauren but they did pull it from there ICI stores and put into Home Depot. We had a small paint store open a few months ago in a small town 10 miles west of me, they carry Devoe, Ralph Lauren which I thought was strange, this store must of struck some kind of deal with ICI to carry those two brands.

Re: Glidden

Which SW paint are you using?
Southwest Builders Heavy Body Eggshell

What are you spraying? Interior drywall?
Yes. lots of new construction.

There are only 3 paint stores in my area, Kwall-Howell, SW and Jones, which carries the Glidden.

Thanks for all the replies!

Re: Glidden

I agree with Mak. Glidden itself is turned into low grade paint sold out of Home Depot. Ici is a good paint both interior and exterior, ultrahide is a good paint it touches up as well as can be expected. Touch ups often never touch up great.

Re: Glidden

As much as I don't care for Glidden, and would not use it on re-paints, even if it was free...
If I had a lot of fresh drywall and I was spraying, I'd take the 60 gals to see how it sprayed new const. type jobs
But then I'm a curious kinda guy

You carried Duron? With them being coporate owned I did not think they sold their products to anyone but their own stores?

Re: Glidden

I am getting ready to start painting on several rooms at a local college here that has specified the use of ICI. It is their odorless paint called life master I believe. What are the opinions on this product?

What, are they afraid of a little odor affecting the taste of the pot or what?

Glidden's Lifemaster is a fine product,
we used a lot of it with great results.
One of the first zero VOC paints.
It's been tested for about 10 years in all kinds of medical,
institutional and commercial settings, with great results.

Maybe you are talking about Home Depot crap,
but ICI Dulux is likely the most popular Contractor's paint in the world.

Re: Glidden

Duron sold to plenty of independent dealers. Maybe in certain areas they kept it corporate only. Now that Sherwin bought them it's been taken from all independent dealers and made corporate only. Except they feel free to sell it out of SW stores in areas where there is still a demand but no longer any dealers.

I feel so out of the loop...I've never used, nor seen the stuff. Where the heck is it sold?

For the "most popular paint in the world", I should at least see the stuff, lol

lets all remember that the world is a much bigger place then are little corner we call America. 6 billion, we are only 300 million. Any way ICI is a British company I believe, but they are sold here in Midwest at the the old glidden corporate stores (now ICI stores) not sure if the Dulux line is in the New england area or not.
