glazing/clear finish

Would someone tell me the difference in glazing and just a clear protective finish such as poly?

glazing

Okay, after a little quick search, I see color is involved in glazing. As you can see, I have no experience with glazing with color. I thought I had seen some clear finishes that were referred to as glazing.

Sometimes a clear coat will get a "glaze" to it. But that's not a good thing. It's like another word for cloudy or haze. So a glazed topcoat is bad.

Another glazing involves color. Like stain or a thick stain called "glaze". Usually "glaze" is put in cracks and stuff to give the look of depth. But people use the word for all kinds of stuff. My boss calls the process of staining wood "glazing". So I dunno lol.

There is also "glazing" and "glaze" with faux wall finishes and stuff. There is millions of uses for the word. =\

And I have always thought of a hazing effect with the term.

glazing usually refers to wiping a pigmented liquid of varying viscosity on a sealed surface. It will often then be wiped off to different degrees to acheive the desired effect.
Clear coating is using a finish that is amber or waterwhite but has no dye or pigment in it.

I have used varnishes, sanding sealer, etc, but never did any glazing. Had my curiosity up.

Glaze added to paint, makes paint transparent. Glazing? Thought that was a window thing...

Glazing has a longer "wet" time to work with it and is flat, has no sheen.
