General rules.....
Contrary to what most painters/designers believe, White can actually make ceilings appear lower in rooms with low ceilings, and make them seem even more distant in rooms with lofty sielings. Based on this, there are some general rules for ceiling color.
1. If you room has ceilings that are 8ft or lower, paint the ceiling a
shade or two lighter than the color of your walls.
2. If your ceilings are higher than 8ft paint them a shade or two darker
than the walls.
Other general rules:
Making small spaces look larger- Pale colors tend to recede visually (move away from you), so the lighter the color you choose for your walls and your floor, the larger your space will apear.
Cool colors such as blues, greens and purples also apepear to recede, making small spaces visually appear more open and spacious.
Shiny surfaces can help you expand space even more, which is definately something to remember when selecting sheen.
Making large spaces look smaller- Deep dark colors appear to visually advance (move twards you) so they're the choice if you need to reduce the sence of space in one, several or all directions.
Other fun stuff- Patterns with strong directional feel (stripes for example) can also help to visually expand your space.
Vertical stripes tend to make rooms seem taller, white horizontal stripes make rooms appear longer.
Maximum streeeeetching:
Furniture kept at the same hight level can make a room appear more spacious
And thats just for visual sizeing... useing 10-15% of your wall color mixed in the celing white will also give the room overal flow.. especially if there is alot of natural light comming in.
