Gel Stain on Fiberglass door.

I was looking for any advice, good or bad, about using gel stain on a fiberglass door? I have a customer looking to match there exterior door with their interior doors and I have never used it before. Is there any other solutions? if not, any tips on using the gel? I don't mind using the gel I am just trying to explore my options and find the fastest, nicest way.

Thanks guys,
Dean

I used the Therma-Tru kit on a Fiberclassic door. it came out great. The door was alittle lighter than the actual mohogany used for the jamb and trim, but was close. It was my first time using it and Ive used it a few more times without any problems.

The gel is the way to go as long as the door was ordered with the intention of using the companies gel stain. in other words, when the customer requests this, i order the door that has the grain, and the factory primer, and i have the stain included with the door order. i am sure you can do another way, but that is my experiance. All fiberglass doors I have installed, I finished with gel stain, they come out great, the nice thing about gel stain is it doesn't have to absorb like regular stain and even on smooth metal doors you can create a grain look. Not as good as real wood, but with practice using brush or the stain comb, dang close to it.
With reg stain it wouldn;t be impossible to do but would take so much time to come up with the same results and doubt it would be as durable as the gel is.
practice on something first if you need to, but depending on the color of the finish, just brush it on lightly at first, with the gel you can always go back over it again.. If to dark or to much, wet a rag with paint thinner, wring it out and wipe it off & start again before it is totaly dried & you will be fine.
Once you do one, you will be surprised at what you can do with it.

Thanks guys, Is there any brands i should look for? The door has been on for about 10 years they said with no finish and i am not sure of the brand door it is. Can I get the stain at my paint supply store?

Thanks again,
Dean
