Galvanized

Does anyone have suggestions on how to paint galvanized steel. The paint on it is flaking off really bad. I know you cant use oil and you have to clean it. But what kind of paint. DTM?

Re: Galvanized

SW makes some real quality epoxy's. In my experience, these are the best option for galvanized steel, aluminum, and such. I used to paint submarines for a while and we used this exact epoxy.

here's a quick link, scroll down a bit to find them...http://www.sherwin-williams.com/pro/...erformance.jsp

good luck and whatever you do, DO NOT use oil...

epoxy's are much more durable and are specifically formulated for this use. you must prime first, no matter what. I've had issues with oil based products on certain metals and would rather use the best product available when my name is on it is all. it's one thing to use a product for "metal" and another for "galvanized steel". there are a number of specific products for galvanized metal from all the top brands(SW, BM, PPG)

Re: Galvanized

Galvanized metal will react with oil based paints and fall of shortly there after. DTM will work. Paint will adhear better to the galvanized if you wipe it with vinegar. We also wipe it with either laquer thinner or deglosser.

Re: Galvanized

Years ago Im talking 20 plus, PPG used to have a product called Poly-Clutch which was recomended for all galvanized metal, it came in a 5 that was filled about 4 gals. worth, then their was a plastic 1/2 gallon bottle that you would mix in which was some kind of acid, it smelled worst than an epoxy ever, the final mix looked liked a pissed down light green paint, this contractor swore by this for galvanized, interior or exterior, and would not warantee ajob on galvanized without it...
