Question

French Door Paint And Stain

I'm getting ready to finish a beautiful set of interior french doors with sidelights and transom. The total unit is approx. 9' high by 10' wide. The customer wanted painted jambs and dividers between the sidelights and transom and stain on the doors, sidelights and transom.

My question is which should I do first? Stain and seal the doors, sidelights and transom, or paint the jambs and dividers first.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanx!
Lance

The painters will be along with the right answer. For me in the past I liked the benefits of staining and sealing first then painting, being that the wood was prepred already and didn't have to worry about hurting delicate painted areas in preping the wood for stain, plus once stained and sealed any paint that got over shot would wipe right off.

I would stain first.. then paint...

Stain first becuase it's messy and if you get stain on the part that is getting paint ... no worries.. its getting painted...

Apply first coat of sealer over stain before paint... if you get a little paint on the edge where the stain is.. it will wipe off easier....

Definately Stain First....
Cause Any Laps Of Stain Is Not Gonna Effect The Out Come Of The Painted Wood Work.....and The Stained Will Be Sealed And Finished So As If Any...i Am Not Making Any Observations... Slips Or Paint Is On The Stained It Wont Have Any Effect And Will Clean Up Easy And Dont Have To Worry About Sanding Off The Paint Or Primer....

Or you could Paint, then stain. Then fix the painted areas that you got the stain on then paint again. Seemed to make sense to one of the pin heads I had on my crew in the past.

I like that. But take it easy on them, at least they stop after one complete go around in the circle, it could be worse and they could still be there sanding off the paint that got on the stain and restaining, then repainting where they just got the stain back on the paint, then fixing where they just got paint back on the stain, then....
