Flip This House!

Last night was the last straw.... Flip this house was on again ..
at some point in the show they point out the budget for painting... they say... $2,300 painting... inside and out! for like a 2,500 sq ft house!... then they say the time frame..??? "we got 3 days to complete all the painting"

Has anyone ever done one of these? the painting that is....

Haven't done "flip this house" the show.. heh, but I have run through houses with some crews up north in three days, inside and out.... course it was mostly vinyl siding.

Yeah, I've worked for "flippers"
Prolly a little more realistic numbers/time frame than what you saw, I actually did make money
But yeah it's all rush-rush-rush and lot's of "just paint it"
I really don't care to do it again

i'm sure y'all know that some homeowners see these shows and think that's an accepted business practice. they think they're being so suave cause they talked the guy's price down. if only they knew the great job they were getting for that price. all those type shows are very detremental to the biz.

you get what you pay for, like slick said, 'just paint it".

Hehe, reminds me of this joke... little johnny, you all know him. Little johnny was watching the construction guys getting ready to fix the house down the street and bothering his mom constantly with questions, finally she said Johnny, just go watch them! So he did... for two days he watched them fix the house, on the third day his mom asked johnny to help her hang a new shelf. While they were hanging the new shelf she asked johnny what he learned, johnny said is this shelf level? His mom said I think so, Johnny said F* it, nail it.

On the other hand, maybe they are educating all the people who end up buying these houses from these flippers and actually have to live in the messes the flippers created. Maybe they are educating these people to realize these flippers sell junk and it's better to pay to have it done right?

We can only hope! The more people I meet in this business I am starting to think all this "people learning from their mistakes' stuff is some sort of fantasy...

For $2300 I'll gladly paint it, but I'm gonna spray the whole thing, and I'm not masking ANYthing!

Re: Flip This House!

I saw an episode on the weekend where the guy thought going in that he could do the flip by putting $10K into it and finish it in 30 days.

At the end of the show, he'd done a lot of the work himself, spent over $45K and took almost 120 days. That show was a real hoot!

Re: Flip This House!

don't be too hard on these guys. there are people that do successfully flip houses. that is what i do for a living for bread and butter. the contracting is a side business to fill in for the slow times. i am not going to brag, but the money can be quite nice.

I hear yah, and I agree, but there are a lot of hacks with no experience in any trade and they are FILLED with unrealistic expectations, and many of those do a poor job whose underlying problems I wouldn't want to inherit.

On the other hand, some do a truly fantastic job, and I have worked with two of those.

You must be watching a different version of the show, because with just a few exceptions they are great TV but not very true to life. Like Decksetc pointed out about the typical show, the guy comes in with no construction experience, severely underestimates both the costs and the timeline, but in the end when he goes $75,000 over budget and has added $15,000 in holding costs he just raises the price of the house to whatever will keep him in a profit. And of course they all end with a happy ending of the naive flipper getting a full price offer.

If life imitated what these shows portray why wouldn't you want to flip houses? You F-up, you just ask more for the house. Awesome.

Re: Flip This House!

because of these shows. In my area at least a 200K house that may need 50K in repairs should be worth 150K or much less for the headachs. But they are selling for like 175K because everybody thinks as long as they buy a fixer upper they will make money. Same with auctions

More like how to flip and flop on your face. I met a guy last week that paid more than what the bank was asking for a forclosure. He won't be in it for long. He also "found more problems than he expected"
