Fix HO's Messy Paint Splatter??

We are starting a job where the previous HO started to paint the place herself. It was a rental and she wanted to turn the place as quick as possible and did a very sloppy job. Then she got divorced and decided to sell the place.

She bought one of those kits from Lowe's that includes a paint tray, roller cage & cover and a few cheap paint brushes all conveniently packaged. I found this assortment in the basement.

I also found partial cans of cheapo oil primer and latex topcoats in the basement. From all other evidence this is what she painted a few rooms with... unfortunately, the wonderful HO kits don't come with drop clothes... which means I have a vinyl floor potentially with both oil and latex splatter. I want to remove it. I tried mineral spirits hoping it would do away with the oil and latex, but it was hard going. Seems I could peel the paint with my finger nail quicker.

My cleaning crew is due in the place soon. What chemicals/cleaners should they be using to clean this floor up?

Thanks in advance.

steve

Mostly putty knives and fingernails

A few cans of Oops! or Goof Off! and some rags

Good Luck

Sounds like my cleaning girls got a real job ahead of them... from what I can figure, the paint has been there for at least three months or more.

I'm not sure of the product name, but heard there is a product that can clean carpet from a latex paint spill. Not sure there is a time limit on the amount of time it sets in-I'm sure a real paint store could provide the necessary info.

Be careful with denatured alcohols, oops and laquer thinner products. On carpet they can eat up the padding under neath as well as ruin the carpet fibers.

Oh jeez that's right, it's a vinyl floor huh?
Good call, yeah test ANY chemical first
Even Oops! and Goof Off! (relatively mild) can permanently discolor CVT,

Like slick said, fingernails and plastic scrapers. Also try some gojo or other oil based cleaner. Chemicals will take the shine off the vinyl.

OR....try a blowdryer to heat it up and soften it, then peel it right up.

Re: Fix HO's Messy Paint Splatter??

Thanks for the help. I never had to clean up someone elses mess before. I always kept a good inventory of drop clothes around and rarely left a drip go astray. This lady must have figured the paint rips would add "character" to the room!!

Re: Fix HO's Messy Paint Splatter??

i wouldnt go after it with a heat gun at all! thats crazy
have the girls shoot the spots with windex let it sit for 10 min and it will come right off plus im sure that they will already have it.
i use it on my truck when i get a smudge on it the amonia does most of the work doesnt hurt the paint at all.
good luck!

Thanks for the help. I'll have them try that before using anything else.

On vinyl a putty knife sould give you a good start, a good scruber and elbow greese should finish the job

I would think some kind of waiver might be called for here for possible discoloring of mat's being cleaned or you may be going "OOPS!"

Re: Fix HO's Messy Paint Splatter??

i also use windex to clean oil base primer off my hands at the end of the day it works better than any hand cleaner ive ever used, the oil just sheets right off me doesnt work for some guys though, not sure how healthy it is but when you want to get to the bar after a long day w/o scrubbin for an hour, nothin beats it, kerosene based hc comes close, then yellow gojo

windex also cleans old stiff hardened latex brushes good too, i put a 2 1/2 wooster in a doubled up paper cup fill the cup up to the ferrule with windex let it sit over night wire brush the old paint out clean very good with warm soapy water until suds disappear and its like new again.
its the same as using the kleen water clean up brush conditioner from hd only cheaper.i only do this to the brushes that have been accidentally hardened with paint, this rarely happens!

Re: Fix HO's Messy Paint Splatter??

yeah one day i left my gojo at the job when i got home i found one of thoes damn above the elbow behind the bicep spots, there was a thing of windex right at the sink so i sprayed the spot and it came right off, only works for some people though?dont now why? i later noticed that the kleen brush conditioner smells exactly the same as windex so i assume it the amonia detergent mix is the key. i suppose windsheild wiper fluid would work also but i havent had the need to find out.keep in mind not to use it if youve been working with bleach that day, it could really screw you up!
