I'm working in newton right now...and just bid a few exteriors.
we travel about 35 minutes to get there and I'll charge $3-500 per day
for me and around $200 for each painter- less for helpers.

Why $200 for a painter???? Don"t you have a set rate for your company, do you know your overhead?

You could learn alot about being in the painting business from your local PDCA or NAPP.

We work in the Newton area as well, we measure the exterior trim, siding, windows, doors etc and apply our production rates to get our price. Aslo add for travel and loss time as no painter works a full 8 hrs a day.

Re: Exterior Prices In Boston Area

I know what I pay... and what I charge. A set rate?...nope cuz I'm in boston next week, them Martha's Vineyard the following week... then across the street from my house next month...my rate changes.

I just figure what my daily rate is for me and for each of my guys...times it by the amount of days it will take and add a few just in case.

Not every one measures to bid... in fact I never do. I can eye a job and determine what my guys can do. maybe I'm not paying my guys much..
maybe I also add gas / drive time and a whole bunch of stuff onto the total? without that info you really don't know what I make.

WHAT DO YOU CHARGE PER GUY?.... i'd like to know..then we'll talk

Why are you so worried?..... does it bother you that other people are different and do things another way?

Yeah it does bother me cause most of the time your way to low
Do you pay your men more money per hour on the Island and less in Boston.

You say you work way to hard and never have any money?

I was only tring to help. instead of guessing on your estimate, try to estimate.

If your making good money and not killing yourself then forget what I said.

I have been in the painting bus since 1972 and on my own since 78 and the biggest help for me has been networking with other experinced contractors, especialy success full ones.

Kelly, what's with everyone nailing us to the cross lately. Taking things literally is becoming such an issue in here. I knew you we're merely giving a rough estimate of what you charge to help the guy out, since all these other guys who are ripping you apart, didn't care to respond to the post.

Anyway, good to see things are well with you and biz.

Hey dude, no problem. I was trying to help if you read my post.

I was told when I was bidding to low, and it helped me get a handle on my business.

NAPP and the PDCA have helped many contractors.

Re: Exterior Prices In Boston Area

I was asking on behalf of my 70 year old mostly retired father in-law. He painted exteriors in Watertown for 30 years then slowed down to retire somewhat. Now he wants to do an exterior in June. Prices have escalated a lot since the 90's. I wanted to know so the old bugger makes a good dime for his effort.
And I'll be painting all the high areas. I think he settled the bid between 8 and 9 thousand. I havn't seen the house. It's good that we talk prices for this area. We have Brazilians taking over our market. How many of you pimp out to a Brazilian crew?
