1st one is what we call a ladder jack.......they work great.
As for the 2nd one........seems high to me, you could build something just as good, ALOT cheaper.

Actually, if it had just one, or even two uses, you might be right
But these things are really, really, handy

Pretty darn sturdy
The thing is, they are way more versatile than the aluminum ones
They are a bucket, a roof wedge, a shelf, a step, a ladder shim...inside, outside...
As ladder jacks, they accept only smaller planks, so you can't really go nuts with them anyway

I suppose in theory yes, the longer ones would give you the potential for a wider walk area. But isn't 12 - 14 inches enough? Do you really want to lug 2 planks up there? I'm not even sure you could get 2 12" planks on them, at least not the 6" thick ones that we use.

The second item is called the pivit tool and they are awesome. You can't build your own cuz they won't be as good. The treads stick to the roof like glue. the more weight on them the better they stay in place. You also cant throw homemade ones from three stories without breaking them (just to let you know how strong they are). Another must have is the werner multi ladder.
