Who makes a good exterior wood primer that's linseed oil-based?

May I ask why you would want that just curious?

I'm trying to put a quote together for a customer.....this guy is very particular about some products, not at all on others. He specifically wants a linseed-oil based primer, and I've had no luck in trying to talk him out of it. It's not something I've used, hence the need to ask the guys on the board.

Tell him you are the pro, not him. YOU specify the proper products for the application.

Ask him if he tells his dentist what to use when filling his cavaties.

I believe california's troubleshooter has SOME linseed oil. Fairly fast drying I understand

I'd tell him linseed oil based primer is old technology-completely outdated. I'd put cover stain and penetrol against his linseed oil any day.

WHy drive a volkswagen bus when you can have a corvette? If he insists, I'd tell him I would be glad to use it, but you won't get a warranty unless I could use cutting edge chemistry...

when I was still in the game, I swore by Cailifornia's Universal Primer (linseed oil).

What makes the new technology oils better?

Not challenging your knowledge, just want to know to keep up with the times

Dont you think cover stain dries to fast? I find it hard to work with on exterior projects only because we spray and back brush so we need something that stays wet for a while give us time to brush it in.

What are the advantages and or the disadvantages. I wonder the cost per gallon. Just curious about the product.

There are reasons why Cover stain is half the price of long oil primers.

In my experience, the linseed oils are not as flexible, though I must admit I haven't tried California Paints.

We've tried a lot of combinations in the 24+ years of painting here in the Bay Area. I have yet to have anything last and grab like cover stain and penetrol combo. We don't use the long oils anymore, though they work well with penetrol as well.

I'm not sure about where you live, but here in the Bay Area, they have reformulated the Cover Stain so it's in between a long and short oil. Great for penetration, but sucks because on interior repaints we have to wait a lot longer before sanding/topcoating.

Use a long oil instead of cover stain if you need workability, but replace the thinner with Penetrol and you won't regret it.

I think we are COMPLETELY missing the customer's point!

It's not about what is the best paint. Most 'green' technology is based on Boiled Linseed Oil. You can make a primer using BLO, Pine Resin, and Citris Solvent that is completely free of toxic chemicals or petrochemicals. MANY consumers are beginning to get some knowledge and ask for 'Linseed Oil' based coatings.

Be ready to educate your customer. Just because it has linseed oil doesn't mean that it is free of toxic chemicals like ethylene glycol or petrochemicals like solvents.
