I was gonna tell him to paint it with flat interior latex then epoxy over that, but I guess your way might work better. You are saint like with all the help you provide.

I am again in the process of relocating and therefore my main terminal is packed up. All my recent posts are from my iPhone.

Way beyond the level of acceptability and ease. Never mind my dedication to this place of escape.

Re: Epoxy Coat On Top Of Epoxy Coat

Well, since you came back to give thanks I have to give you credit. If it is adhering well and just dull, sand it very well to make sure the entire area is scuffed and any loose areas are down to bare. If the entire floor is failing then yeah, you would want to diamond grind it all to a new surface, but I gathered from your thread it just needs refreshed. 80 or 60 grit paper, wipe with xylene/tack cloth. While I don't care for SW epoxy, I would use it in this situation just to make sure it is compatible and will bond.

Re: Epoxy Coat On Top Of Epoxy Coat

while applying epoxy floor finishes is not my expertise per se, i have use a lot of epoxies.
epoxy is a reactive (as opposed to evaporative) coating. even though the existing coating as totally cured, a fresh epoxy application, especially if the same product should eat into the existing coat.
if the epoxy was waterborne, use waterborne again. the same goes for solvent based.

what I would do:
-give it a good sand with 60 or 80 grit as was suggested. (just scuff up the surface, dont sand off the existing especially since you say it is solid.
-sweep and vaccuum as was also suggested.
-give a good solvent wipe if the existing coating was solvent based, or a good alcohol based wipe if the existing was waterborne. (just make sure it is totaly clean OK)
-apply the new stuff and make the homeowner swear on his own life that they will stay off of it for several days.

fyi- the only reason the existing coating has held up so well is because the floor and garage are climate controlled. typically epoxy garage coatings are crap.

good luck to you.

fanatical homeowners are tough to work with at times but they yield a lot of work as they like to repaint and re decorate way more often than is necessary.
