Elastomeric Woes

Haven't even looked at the job yet. But I know it's a 6 year old elastomeric paint job on exterior cedar siding, that's "peeling everywhere!".
Buildings pretty new, so I'm guessing this coating is probably over (the original) stain.
Should I automatically figure on having to strip it completely?
I don't think they don't care what I go back over it with.

I haven't dealt with much/any elastomeric to date, but I've got a "this is gonna be a MAJOR PITA" feeling I can't seem to shake.

Can anyone here give me some good thoughts?

Anyone here desperate for work?

Re: Elastomeric Woes

This may be a scrape and re-paint. And a continued touch up because of the extreme cost of stripping I can't see them paying for it.

I am telling you exactly that this could be a lifetime painting and touching up project for sure. Thanks for deciphering that.

Re: Elastomeric Woes

Elastomeric should come off of stained cedar just like a dirty sheet at a Motel 6.

Re: Elastomeric Woes

People should do some research before they ask a contractor to apply the wrong coatings to their home. Also, a good contractor should walk away from a home owner who wants to force them into applying a wrong coating.

I always take suggestions from homeowners and try and meet their needs, but if they know how to complete the project better than I, then they should just tackle the job themself.

I have a Deck Resto job I am doing now that the home owner asked me to take care of the stucco because they actually painted it out of a tray roller pan and a 6ft ladder with no roller pole. That stuff is peeling up already before I started the job and they did not even paint all the way down to the ground. Probably a foot up from bottom is not painted.

Its a sad day when a home owner takes up a brush. Said Enough!!!

A $100 bill, or a bill for $100. Who exactly is paying who here?

Re: Elastomeric Woes

I would look into a paint shaver, they work very efficiently at removing coatings. I think that their link is www.paintshaver.com . The elastomeric needs to go, anything else is a band-aid.

Re: Elastomeric Woes

I have not used mine on this type of siding but have seen pictures of other contractors using the tool on shake siding. I did not think it would work good on shakes either, but it must. Check it out.
