Ed The Painter

I just was sorting through my Photo Folders and since I just asked for some advice regarding interior paints, I wanted to share my exterior painting job that my roofing crew and I did a few summers ago.

The paint job in the current After Photo is now about 3 years old.

This is my old home that I used to live in, which I now rent out the lower and upper units after completely remodeling them.

I know it looks good now, but how did I do with the color selections to be sort of in character with a Circa; 1880 Period Home?

No.....No.....

You did not read the title of this thread.

This is "Ed The Painters" topic, not some Silly Old Roofer.

Yes, just a Roofer who tries to be a damned perfectionist with whatever he does.

Notice the Maroon/Burgundy accents on thos supports under the lower units picture window planter box?

Also, we did the same Maroon/Burgundy accent to the Half/Round detail in the corner trim boards.

Re: Ed The Painter

I did 100 % of the color selections and then drew the home out to scale on graph paper and used the similarly colored pencils to draw in the various rentitions until I was satisfied.

I did allow my wife to add in comments as long as she approved with my selections, but she and I think very much alike and when I showed her my Colored Pencil Renditions, she too, surprisingly, also had done something a bit similar, but not to the extent, scale and detail that I had also done at the almost exact same time.

Hows that for "High Tech"?

Re: Ed The Painter

Thats how I did my first YP ad way back around 1988 or so. I wasn't satisfied with the graphics layout and formatting and location of verbiage content on their professional design, so I too matters into my own hand.

What I did, was draw out the basic design, including the clapboards and the fancy cuts at the top in black and white and made multiple copies of it, until I found the color scheme I was satisfied with, attempting to be in somewhat conformance with Period Colors, but knowing I did not want a Gaudy Painted Lady. A couple of shades lighter on the brown and a nice blend with the cream and slight accents witht thwe maroon.burgundy colors, just to bring out the details a little bit more.

I'm running very low, both on roofing jobs and leads, so I may use this as a new business plan.

Call it "Roofer Pros Does Painting", or something like that. J/K
(Not about running low on work though, thats getting serious)

Re: Ed The Painter

from what I see you should do good with a painting company. Nothing wrong with running more than one business at a time.

And these are the relatively "low quality" Gliddens you spoke of in another thread??????

Looks pretttttty, prettty, pretty good.

And just for a question of contention............I know you are fairly particular about unlicensed hacks. Are you rental units legal??????? Just getting to know how you feel about this sort of "above boardness".

Re: Ed The Painter

No Malco, this is the exterior paint job that I did with my crew 3 years ago.

The end result of the Glidden Paint job turned out satisfactory to me, so I was just seeking information if Professional Painting Contractor would use Glidden rather than the more highly touted BM or SW products.

Re: Ed The Painter

Misunderstood the gist of the other post. I do remember you mentioning this job though. I just thought that you HAD used Glidden on this Exterior. My mistake.

Again......Looks quite good.

I used BM oil base for the final coat on the exterior, if I am remembering correctly and some other brand of primer tinted to the same colors as the final coat, which we applied 2 coats of. I know the primer began with the letter "D", but can't remember the full name.

I see you edited your post since I first responded.

As far as the units themselves being legal or the tenants that I rent to?

I presume the units themselves.

They are legal, but non-conforming, due to one Furnace with one gas meter and also the electricity being run off of one meter, with separate breakers for each unit though.

Does that make the home illegal, by being non-conforming?

I pay all electricity and gas bills for the 2 apartments. Other than that, the local inspectors have been through there about 3 years ago to inspect everything, which only turned out that they wanted the home to get painted, so I did.

If it is about the tenants I lease to, they have always been American born, not out of any prejudicial reasonings, but just who applied to lease the unit. I have already offered first dibs to the upper unit to one of my workers, who is hispanic, but a full and legal US citizen, after jumping through all of the governmental hoops and dealing with the red tape delays.

3 1/2 years ago, I lived downstairs with my wife and my son who was born in 2003, until I fell into a perfect home and location to move to, off on a cul-de-sac with little car traffic and only 2 short blocks away from the elementary school.

At that time, I completely remodeled the entire downstairs unit with new kitchen and bathroom upgrades and installed T $ G carside plank ceilings, plus added fans for each room with light fixtures included and also a whole chit-load of canned ceiling lights recessed into several of the rooms.

No......I was referring to the rentals of the units and not the occupants!

Primer "D"... Duron? Dutch Boy?

Re: Ed The Painter

I think it might have been Duron.

It was recommended by the clerk at the EPCO Paint store who stocked the BM.
