Dust Everywhere...Can I Start Painting?

Just how clean does a room have to be before you paint?

2 story house and about 80% of the upstairs is done (skim coat, sanding). There is 1 bedroom left but I figure I can start in the other bedrooms so long as I close the door.

The downstairs still has some work but there is dust everywhere. Should I have all that cleaned up before I start painting in the bedrooms?

My fear is that I will bring dust with me in my shoes, clothes, etc... just by walking passed everything downstairs.

I'm trying to get started so I don't have to do the whole house at once. Should I just be careful, paint room by room, and then ward off that room will plastic so no dust gets back in?

Thanks in advance.

If this is new construction, the first place you should start is with a broom sweeping the walls and the floors. Do as much of the area you can, then start painting. If they're not done upstairs, sweep the entire downstairs and get going. Shop vac would come in real handy...I wouldn't start anywhere there is dust though. We used to sweep the whole house before we started to prep anything.

With the "fine dust" bags
(be careful, those fine dust bags rip if any chunks of demo get sucked up)

You probably won't bring in enough dust on you to matter
But I'd see being careful about it

More important would be can dust get sucked in under the door or through a door/window after I've prepped or painted

I'd clean as much a possible before starting
