Question

Dry Fall

I am bidding a large comm. ceiling with Dry Fall, can anyone tell me if I need primer with oil if the steel is primed except at the welds? Should I prime the galv. sheet metal ceiling? My foreman says he has done a few for the last company he worked for and only applied 1 coat wih no primer in beither oil or water borne, but the MPI hints otherwise. Any help? THX

Wait a minute, isn't dryfall what happened to that chic in the Brian Adams music video 'cuts like a knife'.

Re: Dry Fall

Sorry, I have never sprayed dryfall myself. In your case, I would be torn between doing what the instructions said, and using my foremans experience.
Hopefully, someone else will pop in with advice.

Bob, turn off MTV, and get to work.

Re: Dry Fall

We have sprayed a comm. steel ceiling before. 18' up and the dryfall from SW worked great. We did prime it, we used the primer that the guys at SW recommended, 401 I think. We did the ceiling black so we got it tinted gray and did two coats of the dryfall black.

The pictures don't really do the ceiling justice, because of those huge lights.

Re: Dry Fall

I worked on a large building back in 98 where the guys spayed the ceiling and then spent the next 3 weeks powerwashing it off. I didn't catch all the details but they said something about a light coat of oil on the galvanized. The fellows had it ready for opening day but I can't imagine they made any money on that one.

Yeah Galvanized needs to be washed before it can be painted... There is a thread here somewhere about it.

Re: Dry Fall

If you can find the March/April 05 issue of PWC magagine there is a good article on galvanized steel..what to looks for..a couple of simple tests to see if the galvanized is ready for painting etc.

Nothing looks worse that paint failing in mass on galvanized metal. Fixing it must be a pain in the azz. I'd say be careful.

Re: Dry Fall

hanks for the help, I found that with oils you must prime. Water bornes on the other hand goes either way, If you use a higher end product no primer is needed but two coats are suggested. You would be amazed at the inconsistencies of information out there. Again, thanks.

Paint that dries as it falls. Leaving only a fine dust when it hits the ground. SW sells it.
