Does Everyone Here Have People That Work Under Them?

Am i the only solo guy here?

The main problem i come across is the hirer, wants (or i guess needs) to be there cause obviously doesn't want me to steal anything.

So by myself its more time and more time they don't want to spend being there off of work.

It's fairly common... when dealing with a HO you need to mention nannycams in an off fashion and how you know ALOT of people that use them these days to put them at ease... on signing.

If i ever hired someone to do work for me (unless friend or family) especially someone i never meet, i'm gonna make sure someone is at the house to watch

Re: Does Everyone Here Have People That Work Under Them?

My company does 2 week interior jobs and I never visit the job site. I'm not a baby sitter. I'm a businessman.

I have a hiring process that I follow. I won't hire someone I don't trust. I make them earn my trust before they paint a dog house.

I also have systems in place to follow up and make sure my trust was deserved. First, I never put a newbie inside. They work outside for months before they step foot indoors.

Sounds like you need some better hiring practices, perhaps some better sales skills, and/ or a better company image.

thats ridiculous, if i didnt feel that i could trust someone i wouldnt hire them to do the work. a little trust and respect goes a long way!

isnt it degrading to your integrity that they cant trust you, theres more to life than money!

Re: Does Everyone Here Have People That Work Under Them?

ive had a few HO's ask me if im trustworthy, i say i don't know whatch ya got in here! then smile! i think it shows them that im a real person, rather than if i say, yes sir mr. HO sir you can trust me!

this is of course the last question they ask, after an hour of getting to know each other. throughout this (usual) hour i like to incorporate some comedy into my professional persona. i think it shows confidence, and alleviates any pressure so that we can openly discuss the scope of the job.

i cant say that i would say that to every HO, you just gotta be able to read people, but i always try to joke around a bit.

I don't mind if the customer stays home while I'm working as long as they don't get in the way. Most of the time I enjoy the conversation. They usually end up going on about their business after awhile anyway.

Back in the day when i still got into remodels, i never had this happen to me. It is kind of like Farell said, if the HO hired you then it was also because you come across good. Has this happened to you before?

Re: Does Everyone Here Have People That Work Under Them?

I'm, amazed at the amount of people who do trust me, I'm leaving the key under the whatever/I'm running to the mall...I must have a trusting face. As far as my workers(3) are concerned..I am totally comfortable that they wouldn't steal a dime from a customer house. But after painting with them for so long you get to know the persons character/ they are all class acts. i'm trying to get out of the bucket and have started sending them into home by themself...its a wonderful things...frees me up to do other business related stuff.

Re: Does Everyone Here Have People That Work Under Them?

I have one guy under me and that's it. I may pick up a few in the summer as helpers for exteriors. I have never had someone who didn't mind if they left and left us in the house w/o them. I have had keys to places sent to me before we even start the job. All tho I have to say that 80% of my work is referrals. so they must figure if they got my name from someone they trust then they trust me.

Re: Does Everyone Here Have People That Work Under Them?

iv'e been reading this book "be the boss your emploee's deserve"
its really opened my eyes!it talks about how a biz is founded by two things, TRUST, and RESPECT! this is the catalyst for biz growth!
after reading some of it i took a break to think about it, my old boss didnt respect or trust any of us, not even his own brother thats been workin for him 10 yrs now! i left for this reason, but when i started my own biz i found that i was just emulating him cause thats all i knew!
man am i glad i took a trip to the library!it doesnt matter how much $$$
you have for biz growth, if you dont have a respectful work atmosphere, built on trust!

this applies to the HO too, its all ethics, if they dont trust you its going to be hard to give them your full potential, if they totally trust you then your willing to do everything in your power (hopefully) to return the respect.if you treat adults like children theyre going to act like children!

i highly recommend this book for anyone that wants to get out of the bucket someday!

Re: Does Everyone Here Have People That Work Under Them?

lornmastro, the book also talks about, opinion input from employee's, they have to feel that they are on board with you, and not their own subculture of the biz, its all about building and maintaining a team, not just 1$ raises each year and slave mentality production tactics. if everyone feels that your in their team with them they will be more productive, and both people benefit!

i remember when i used to suggest an idea to my old boss, he would say "i dont pay you to think do i?" well if he would have atleast acknowledged my input and came to a reasoning with me i would have been fine with it and went back to work, instead i screwed him by doing as little as i could get away with!!
