Do You Use Any Publications, Like Newspaper Clips To Sale?

I use a this old house article when I'm on my estimates called:

Not all painters are Pro's, does anyone else use anything?

People always seem shocked when I hand them a bid for their exterior repaint when I have to "fix" the previous painter's lack of professionalism. This article completely covers the topic of why I am seeking the price I am.

I break it down for them and say,

Now we would think on a project like one this old house does no contractor will rip them off, well lets read this about cheating with a lower grade paint. I read all my stuff to them aloud and I hold on to these and point.

Ed,
That post hit the nail on the head
I agree that is the problem with contractors they don't stand on principles they are swayed by another contractors price just to get the job. I always tell my customers we only use Benjamin Moore's Top of the line paints, cause why would you cheap a job out when it comes to paint,

Re: Do You Use Any Publications, Like Newspaper Clips To Sale?

In our country anyone can declare themselves a professional painter. There are few licensing requirements or governing boards, and the cost of entering the profession is minimal. The unfortunate result of this is that a high percentage of those who call themselves painting professional are unqualified opportunists who would like nothing more than to repaint your home every three to four years.

Even more (opportunists) now now every layed off worker is a contractor now..............

Great article Ed, the PDCA has quite a few aimed at painting contractors but can fit any professional.

Re: Do You Use Any Publications, Like Newspaper Clips To Sale?

You know, it has been over a year since I read each of those two articles carefully myself.

It sounds like I need to take a dose of my own postings and see if it means more in this economy, than when I originally posted them on this site.

Marc was the one who obtained the Washington Post article for me, by my unrelenting request and regarding the other article, I contacted the author for permission to post his article on the forums.

I can see many ways to adapt, what I remember about both of those articles, to your own industry specific articles for your own use, rather than just use someone else's words. Make them meaningful with how you deem yourself to operate and differentiate from the below average crown of wannabe professionals, who just don't get it.

Ed

Jim Olsztynski “Better yet, don’t even shop for quotes. Ask around, do some background checking, inspect some projects, but find yourself a contractor you have confidence in and let him name his price. If it’s more than you can pay, ask what can be done to bring it down. But don’t expect someone else to give you the same job at a lower price and then expect top-notch quality.
“You’ve all heard the expression, ‘You get what you pay for.’ None of you would go shopping for fine china in a bargain basement store. But that’s what everyone seems to do when it comes to home remodeling
I am going to use this after a few closing attempts:

After I read that out loud I am going to say, now folks don't you like and trust me? Great I can go ahead and set you up right now.

I am trying out:

"Have I earned your trust enough to feel that I have earned your business today?"

Bump.

Because I needed a copy of the earlier posted articles for an appointment tonght.

Those were the articles about why a home owner should not choose a contractor based on low price or competitive bidding, by the way.
