It is a simple fix, use the 3/4 inch paint, let dry, take out the belt sander & sand as needed with 36 grit paper, skim coat sand paper marks with rock hard, sand with orbital sander, read directions completely on back of bottle of j/d in between shots, while holding sander in other hand. When the bottle is empty, the patch will look as good as before.

If not take pic and ask question again!!

In this case I would recommend that the OP hire a licensed and insured professional contractor who is qualified in drywall repair and painting.

I offer this advice to anyone who is uncertain of the proper way to do something that is outside of the norm for them or their profession.

Please hire or barter services with professional licensed and insured contractors.

Hit it with some spackle lightly sand and hit with touchup paint. The guys are just giving you the business. I'm assuming you new that.
