decks...seal entire deck?

o.k. lets hear from the big dogs on this one sealing decks, should the bottoms be sealed ? I have always left the bottoms alone . I would pressure wash the bottoms, but like so many others I have heard from, I would not seal it for the drainage , however the customer has other notions about this.

So, whats it gonna be ? seal the entire deck or not ? Appreciate your wisdom.

It is recomended that you should seal all sides of the wood everywhere except for on the coast

The problems on the coast is the canoe effect, where the stain would hold the water in the wood - now why this doesn't apply elsewhere, that part I can't recall
