Deck Staining Methods?

Which is your application or method of choice? Brushing, Rolling, Spraying?
I have to refinish and stain a Deck and I want to complete it in the shortest amount of time possible. Any advice from you Pros out there would be greatly appreciated.

1) Apply a good cleaner (not bleach based). If there is failing stain on the deck, you have to remove it with a stripper.
2) Wash with pressure washer nozled down to 800 psi or so. On a 4 gpm machine a number 10 orifice is a good choice. Make sure you use steady even passes. If you stop or jerk along a floorboard, you will get lapping lines.
3) pH balance and brighten with a mild acid.
4) Let dry to 15-15% moisture content.
5) Apply high quality, oil/alkyd based semi transparent sealer with an airless or HVLP and backbrush into wood. Mask the floor under the rails and thn start by sealing the rails first.

We use a product which is an oil based that can go on wet wood (contractor available only right now, so you have to order it in). We can do a 500 s/f deck with rails and steps in one day using this product. If you want.. pm me and I will give you the company contact info.

Also take a peak at my website www.restore-a-deck.com. Its consumer based but there is a ton of info on technique and information on sealers in my newsletters.

Without going into too much detail, I can't tell you how fun staining a deck is when you can attach a large stain brush to an extension pole.

I like to brush stain into the grooves/grains by hand, but also like the option to do it standing as well.

Should someone else from standing roll the stain to the deck, then you brush also while standing behind them... well that's a good time.

This is all fine and dandy, after the appropriate prep of course.

I call it "The Dance"
I'll often have audiences for that part
And I do accept tips

That's it though, no roll, no spray, just a bigazz Bestt Lieco and six feet of Wooster Sherlock Positive Lock Extension Handle

One other note: Your best bet on floors (even if you spray) is to use a pad.

rough rider works too. Just use a pan instead of a bucket.

What type of stain is currently on the deck? Solid or semitransparent?
Oil or Latex? What type of stain are you planning to use? How big is the deck?
Brush up against home 1 foot away.
Spray with pumpup sprayer between boards.
Roll on thick.
Go over with clean roller.
No time at all!
