Deck Restoration & Staining

Can someone give me a step by step process for refinishing a deck.

The wood is in good shape but it needs to be stripped down.

What is the proper way to apply the stain? Do you apply mulitiple coats?

How about poly, is it necessary? How long after you stain can you apply it?

Your expert opinion is appreciated

Re: Deck Restoration & Staining

Well, you left out a few important variables. What type of finish is on it now? Poly is the LAST thing you ever want to put on a deck.

First, strip the old finish. Follow that immediately with a brightener/nuetralizer. Allow wood to dry for a few days (without rain). Test with a moisture meter to ensure moisture is below 12%. Then apply a penatrating oil finish to seal the wood...I always recommend, and sell two coat jobs no matter what it is I'm doing...paint, stain, whatever.

You can apply the chemicals and the stain with a pump up garden sprayer if you have to. I use an airless for the stain, and garden sprayers for the chems. Two guys on two sprayers can strip and brighten a large area relatively quickly. If you're going to spray the stain, you'll probably want to back-pad or back-brush to ensure an even finish.

Strip
Neutralize/clean
Brighten
Stain (oil)

Or
Strip (if needed)
or scrape/sand (if needed)
Solid Stain (oil)
Solid Stain (oil)

I use Cabots for stains and Sikkens for solid stains
Sikkens requires two coats the first time (maintenance coats only 1)
