Cost To Finish Cabinets

I work for a contractor that wants to start building custom cabinets on site and he wants me to finish them, I don't have any experience in fine finishing cabinets. Any help on coatings and best way to apply them, tricks of the trade etc. I also have no idea on how to price this new line of work. Thanks for any advice and help.

Ask the contractor to spec them for you. Staining and finshing is a big subject. Lots of products, lots of ways to do it. Research first, then practice. Know the woods. Some woods will need to be pre-treated, some won't. Some woods absorb more stain than others. Tons of info to learn.

This is not for the unseasoned, but if you can spray well, you can learn with some practice. There is a ton of work involved- removing/replacing doors, shelves, drawers, masking off interiors if prefinished, setting up spray systems to keep dust off, etc, etc, etc.

We've done custom cabinetry for years and kept refining our system. We now get calls all the time because people like the look of cabinets finished on site. It's a great specialty area and has gotten our foot in the door for other painting.

Bid as best you can, talk with the contractor and discuss the fact that it might be a little bit of a learning curve but you'd like to be able and offer it as a service to him. He may be willing to take the chance.

A minimum of a week or two depending on size. Also, if staining, get sample wood from the cabinet installer of the type you will be working with and MAKE Large samples. That will help.

Good Luck

Re: Cost To Finish Cabinets

I would suggest working (apprenticing) for a cabinet finisher for a while

You'll not learn it from a thread on the internet, sorry
