Contact Paper Issues

What do you do with kitchen cabinets that need to be painted inside and out but the shelves are covered with very oooooold vinyl contact paper. It would be hell to try to remove it (many shelves), it is ugly to paint over it, and tacky to cover over it with new contact paper. Is there an easy way to remove it that I don't know about? Even if we did get it off, what about the glue residue? The house is being placed on the market, so the HO does not want to invest too much in this problem, but it is in a very wealthy area, so it should look nice. Please! Any suggestions would be welcome. What would you do?

Thank you.

Remove the covering and associated gook
Prime and paint (quality enamel)

Remove it...it can be done
Questionable shelves, use a solvent based primer...which would probably be the proper one anyway/regardless

Do it right, or replace the shelves

If it's that bad, really, "too much work" to properly clean and prep, it would more than likely be cost effective to replace the shelves

Re: Contact Paper Issues

Use MEK to remove it. Nasty stuff, yes. Will it remove it, yes. If the glue remains use acetone. Nasty stuff, yes. Will it remove the glue, yes. I would suggest some nitrile gloves and a respirator.
