for those of you that have several crew running, and get the sub to actually collect the check from the home owner, can youexplain some details on this.

1. To me it seems the owner of the company should want to do a final inspection before payment, but can see how that would take up a lot of time.

2. how to tell the home owner about this process, or when do you tell them??

3. have you ever received any negative vibes from the home owner about this process.

thanks

Re: Collections

I don't like a crew to do a final clean up if I have not walked it first. I won't accept a check until I have spoken in person with the homeowner about the job and gotten their feedback. I don't like Employees picking up checks.

Re: Collections

Inspection of completed work – Upon substantial completion of work, while the crew is still on the job site, the customer agrees to become available for an inspection of the work area with the crew leader....

It's in the proposal.
Most pay by credit card, so collecting is not an issue
If it happens to be a cheque, crew leader picks it up.

Completion form has to be filled,
Qustionaire has to be checked
Testimonial must be collected or have a good reason if not collected
A follow up phone call will take place in 3 days

Re: Collections

I've done work for a company and been asked to collect the check, so maybe I can give some perspective

1. To me it seems the owner of the company should want to do a final inspection before payment, but can see how that would take up a lot of time.
You'd think
That's how I'd do it
It kinda threw me to be asked to do that as a sub
At least have one guy/gal to the inspections for all the subs and collect the checks, owner or working for the owner

2. how to tell the home owner about this process, or when do you tell them??
I'm not sure how they did it(if at all), but I think sometimes they would call when we were almost done
Sometimes it was definitely a surprise
And sometimes they didn't even wait for me to whip out the bill before whipping out the checkbook

3. have you ever received any negative vibes from the home owner about this process.
Yes...a few
But not a lot really
Mostly it was from Mr./Mrs. Hoity Toity (we've got a few out here) who "Will mail Mr. Owner A Check"
Some would duck out after receiving the bill, and some would "not be home" when we were done (after being on site and watching everything for the 26 hours of the job, to not be there for the last hour is a little suspicious)

I should say, that I speak English, am neat in appearance, and very professional, friendly, and personable (as were my crews)
I was more than capable of handling an owner-type walk-through, having done them for years
The same could not be said for all the other subs working for this company
I do know that they ran into more problems than I...on a few different levels
Most of which would have been avoided by having the owner or general foreman-type do a walk-through

Re: Collections

i used to collect for my old boss, walk around and all, and no one ever seemed suspicious about it, most people dont even get anything at all from a mutual inspection(just gazing at a fresh coat of paint, while i talk in a forgien paint language). although i did feel kind of odd about it cause I WASNT BEING PAID TO DO SO, but the custo's never had a prob with it at all, and i was only 19-20 at the time, my old boss would even delegate me to do this over his lil bro (30's) so i guess its all about how that specific person can present him/her self(i am a dude btw) and close the custo!!too bad for him that he didnt pay me the $$$ that i deserved or gave me his gratitude or id still be doin it for him!!!! well ive gotta say though, regardless of the neglect, after seein the checks for jobs that i did completely on my own besides contract them (dormers, touch ups and such) it still wouldve been hard NOT to go out on my own!!! so that being said id say its worth the extra hr or 2 for the owner to just do it himself!!!! he ran a 10-12 man crew and was always busy, but its just not good for anyone else besides the owner to see the amount of the check, and its good face for the owner to do the insp/collect, and potential probs if he/she doesnt!

i agree with slick though, mr.&mrs. tight wad types are most definately out there, unfortunately, but theyre better than mr.&mrs. i need a money mangement class, can i make payments!!!

That company is extremely high profit
I'll PM you some numbers, as the company is still around, I'm not sure I should post them

Re: Collections

As I get older and have the desire to work myself out of the business, I'd delegate this job and whatever else is needed to whom ever seems best qualified to do it. Currently, I pick it up, especially as I am a one man show, but if I were to grow I'd make necessary changes as I see fit, just makes sense to me...
