Coastal vs non coastal

Do you guys on the coast do anything different with regard to salt water or other effects from being on the coast?

Oh cripes yeah
Things rot, rust, mold over and mildew up like you wouldn't believe out here
Sometimes I have to wipe down the sea spray with (tap water) wet rags -then let it dry - before painting...each day
Sometimes I can't start until 10AM for the fog
Sometimes I can't paint at all for the fog
Latex+deck=crap...it doesn't hold up for a year (at least up north, with the snow and all)
Learn how to replace rake boards, you don't want to wait for a carpenter for one rake board, and there will always be at least one rotted rake board...always
Kill Mold Kill Mildew Kill Mold Kill Mildew Kill Mold Kill Mildew Kill Mold Kill Mildew Kill Mold Kill Mildew Kill Mold Kill Mildew Kill Mold Kill Mildew Kill Mold Kill Mildew Kill Mold Kill Mildew Kill Mold Kill Mildew Kill Mold Kill Mildew Kill Mold Kill Mildew Kill Mold
Latex+metal=crap....it doesn't hold up for a season out here
X-14 is your best friend
Always keep some fishing poles in your truck/van
I'm sure there's more....
...did I mention Kill Mold and Kill Mildew?

You painters will love this....we will generally only use PVC trim or Azek trim to prevent the call backs. For hardware only lifetime finish warranty. AND poly caulking never latex. HD or Blowes sells a poly type of caulking that will hold paint---I am testing this.

It's not THAT bad here. On 'the island' salt spray eats everything.

Been THERE on business or otherwise, Ol'#2's from Boston/RI. Couldn't wait to get home.

yeah, we go to the Dr. more, due to the allergy increase from humidity and strange climate--we live 1/4 mi. from the ocean--

to keep in line with your question...there is much more wear on the houses here on the coast--everyone has shakes up here on the ocean which means they are all on 3 year painting cycles, unless they like the weathered look, but most dont--but then again a house on the water here is between 1-10 million, so I'm thinking they arent too concerned with throwing 5K at a painter every 3 years

I have good luck with GE XST caulking on azek boards. It is paintable. It seems people around here want the plasticwood filled and painted. The azek i put on my house is unpainted because i am lazy. Now it has started to algae up real nice, esp. the butt ends.

I painted (more than once in 5 years) a huge grid fence at a property i tend to. The fence must be two hundred feet long and six feet high. Made out of square mahogany posts. Well it was a beautiful day for painting - 70 degrees, sunny, and dry. Finished up around 4 and headed home. I came in at 7 am the next day to find most of the fence paint running all over the pool patio. A huge fog bank must have rolled right in as soon as i left . Thank god for powerwashers, scrubbrushes, and time and materials.

It occured to me that guys are on the coast do things differently. Was just wondering how you deal with salt and relentless moisture.

My first plane ride was this trip to vegas, and I still have never seen a coast or the ocean. Thanks for the replies.

What base is the XST caulking? If the label is yellow and black I have used it before.

The butt ends and the sides of Azek have pores that are cut in half and get dirty really easy. They need to fix this problem.

Btw, check out allvegaspoker someone their has your avator and it moves--does a little dance.

I have vinyl siding and mildew just loves it. I am looking to replace the siding when I can find a mildew colored one. I sell the Azek so they will never have to hire a painter and I do not get calls about rot.

People that like good , quality finishes do want the azek painted. They want nail holes filled, seams and gaps caulked, and sometimes they just want a different color. Yes , XST is yellow and black tube and I 'll tell you something else about azek doug- use stainless finish nails to fasten it.
