Clay Tile Roof

I'll be doing an exterior later that has the spanish style curved clay tile roof. The area I'm worried about is the porch roof to reach the second story. Pitch is minmal.

What's the procedure for this? Can I walk on them?

Re: Clay Tile Roof

Joe

is there good access for a lift, even just for that part of the job?

I have no iead about the tensile strength of the clay roof tiles, but I would assume even if they say walking on them is ok, it's not something I would be excited about doing

Re: Clay Tile Roof

Be very carefull Joe, those things can break easily and make sure the roof is dry, as they are real slippery.

Re: Clay Tile Roof

Thanks a lot guys.

I got a better look at the roof, and they aren't round, petty much flat, some kind of aggregate, not tile. 1/2" + thick. How are those attached? Do they just hang on a couple of nails?

Re: Clay Tile Roof

Those "flat aggregate" kinda tiles are WORSE than round clay tiles for breaking!

I always wanted to try 2-3 layers of carpet in a strip to walk on, if pitch is pretty flat...

Re: Clay Tile Roof

They are laid out just like asphalt shingles. I got an even better look at them, they must be 3/4" thick.

Truthfully, if I do the job, I'll probably walk them bare. Just want to find out more about them, where to step. Or not step actually.
I don't weigh a whole lot, and I have the light step of a ninja.

Worked several large, steep pitched cedar shake roofs in the past, so I understand how delicate things are.
