Clawfoot Tub Exterior

I know this sounds like a HO question, but since it fits within the scope of my work, I'll ask it here.

My wife purchased a clawfoot tub, the interior of which is slightly worn, but in good enough condition, that it doesn't need redoing. The tub itself is in good shape, and doesn't need any repairs.

The exterior surface of the tub is the wrong color, and she will be painting it prior to us installing it in the master bathroom of our addition (btw- I'm the contractor on the job).

Any suggestions on how she (she's the "painter" - has a good eye and pretty good hand-eye coordination, but lacks some knowledge) should go about this. She's adept at using sanders, grinders, epoxy, hardeners, etc, so please don't make the answer applicable to your average HO.

Although we don't own a sprayer, I have sprayed some ceilings, walls, & automobile parts long ago. I also am adept with stone work such as granite counters, marble fabrication, etc, which might help here - probably not?

Thanks in advance!

I have had good luck with any good oil base semi or gloss paint. sand with 220 and roll it with a fine nap or worn out mini roller. I would add a little Penetrol to increase leveling. I have used this on refrigerators, freezers, dishwasher fronts. It works great. Mike in Moab

Re: Clawfoot Tub Exterior

I scored a claw foot out of someone's back yard years ago, the interior was in fine shape, but the outside was a mess. I took it to a sand blaster and he blasted it and primed it for very little ca$h. It's still in my bathroom today and looks like the day it was made.
